NJ Median Income maps 2008 (Passaic, Washington: property taxes, restaurant, vs.)

Jobs will always pay more in the NYC area than in the Philly area because the cost of living is so much higher. Average housing prices in NNJ are probably more than double average housing prices in SNJ. Even simple things like food and take-out cost slightly more in NNJ than SNJ. Therefore, the incomes would have to be much higher up there in order for people to afford to live there.

I would reverse that. COL is so much higher because jobs pay more.

Update:

I've updated the map with data from Philadelphia and PA county suburbs. Full disclosure:

1) Selected all zips within a 30 mile radius of PA, on the Philly side, and performed a table join.

2) Reclassified the color scheme, due to more records being entered into the database. Because the majority of records were way below the median household incomes in NJ, it pulled down the breaks. That's why you now see towns like Medford and Moorestown in green instead of in yellow.

no freaking way. maybe if you compare a similar house in ridgewood and cinnaminson, but apples to apples? no way.

mike - are your figures based on zip or township code? reason i ask is because there are a lot of towns that have a zip of another - montgomery being one. my SIL lives in montgomery but had an 08540 zip (princeton) at her old place. long valley is another - there are several zips belonging to washington township: Califon, Schooleys Mountain, Port Murray, Hackettstown.

It's strictly by the zip code. The Census recognizes these boundaries, I do believe.
