That's how my hubby feels when we go to a Cuban restaurant that is charging $30 for Ropa Vieja and rice and beans. He's like "My Mom could cook for 30 people with that!" LOL

I'm not sure if it qualifies as soul food, but there is a New Orleans style place in Madison that is AMAZING. I don't remember the name, but it is on the same street as the small movie theater and is right across the street from the train station.

It is so good.

Shrimp and grits
BBQ
Mac and Cheese
Fried Chicken
Mashed Bourbon Sweet Potatoes
Etoufee

Definite recommendation from me.

Not soul food in NJ, but one of the most memorable meals I've ever had was when I visited Charleston SC about 10 years ago, and had the pleasure of dining at Jestine's Kitchen. The best fried chicken and okra I've ever had.
