I've said it before and I'll say it again... rather have a permanent enema than live in a really, really RED state.....
Now that I've gotten that off of my chest...
The one thing I am really intolerant of is INTOLERANCE. That said, I am not so narrow minded that I can't have people close to me who are very different then me, in race, gender, religion, ideology, etc.
Some of my dearest friends are Limbaugh Loving Palin Praising Republicans. While they know that sickens me, they are good and decent people and I am glad to have them in my life.
I'm Christian, but I have friends who are of every faith and I would not want it any other way.
Like I've said before, if it were 9/11 again tomorrow, I would HOPE we would not say "Are you a Jew? Muslim? Black? White? Dem? Rep? Liberal? Conservative" before lending a hand. I would hope we would all be part of the HUMAN race that day.
There is more that unites us than divides us.

Sure, we're part of the "human" race but many people are most comfortable being in close proximity to people that are most like themselves. People that share similar values, dreams and interests.
Not that everyone has to march in ideological lockstep but rather enough in common that you're more interested, if not comfortable, in being in their presence.

There is much truth to what you say. I am a suburbanite, and I am of color. I thought long and hard about moving to the closest city to me (Trenton), but after looking all over the city at the neighborhoods and the schools, no matter how much I tried, I could not find a place that I felt was a good place to raise children. I do not feel bad about making that decision.
Now, I am largely liberal (but not totally), but if I could, I would move South in a heartbeat. There are many areas (Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, suburban Atlanta) that are liberal enough for me.
But would I want to live in a "Red" area? No. Most of the time, Red means "hostile to minorities."
Let me ask: Are you implying that people like me are hypocrites? I don't see how you can say that.

I've never been one to think that if you are a person of color who "makes it" you should be subjected to living in an inner city with high crime and poor schools. THAT would be incredibly racist in my humble opinion.
What I object to (as a "white" person myself) is when a minority family moves into a "mostly white" neighborhood and people get all hot and bothered. COMPLETELY pisses me off.
I also do not associate the word "diversity" with anything bad. NOR does it conger up images of "bad" cities full of "the others." To me it means what it says - diverse. I don't see anything wrong with that.

The "Red" vs "Blue" paradigm is overrated. Rather than label an entire state "red" or "blue", you'd be better served looking at county data. For instance, Morris County and Hunterdon County NJ are "red" counties, having voted twice for Bush in successive presidential elections. Starr County Texas is a border county in the Rio Grande Valley. It is for all intents and purposes, a third world society. It voted 90% for Kerry in 2004.
Would you rather live in Morris County NJ (in a "blue" state) or Starr County Tx (in a "red" state)? I think we all know the answer.

The reason why people get upset is that it lowers their property value.
