I am leaning toward to closer towns to NYC, rather than going far, even if it means a house in a bad shape. If I look on the Internet, I can find some listings in Essex/Bergen within our bedget, but probably it will be very shabby. Well, we will go take a look at them this weekend. If we get depressed so much, we will consider going for better quality house, farther away from NYC.
I am working in Midtown Manhattan.
Your continuous advice is much appreciated. Also, do you have any town in particular you recommend in Union County or Middle Essex County? Princeton area?

Well, try Clifton & Brookdale or Garfield and Wallington. I realize they're not the cream of the crop or they don't have "prestige" but w/ your budget and commute restrictions there are not too many choices, try looking in the best areas of those towns, you might be surprised what you can find.
Take a look in wayne, nj. Just make sure you tell your realtor to make sure the house isn't in the flood zone.
$289k lisitng in Wayne (http://www.realtor.com/search/listingdetail.aspx?ctid=95100&ml=3&mxp=25&bd=4&typ =1&sid=3f1664404e4441649b6166dd4fd428a5&pg=4&lid=1 100555111&lsn=34&srcnt=44#Detail - broken link)
Also nose around The Caldwells and Fairfield. Won't be much in your budget but with a little leg work you could get lucky, especially if you are willing to take a fixer-upper.
All these towns have good schools and the commute to Dover and NYC would be easy.
I would not suggest living as far out as Byram or that area. The commute to NYC will kill you eventually. The thought of driving from Edison or Princeton to Dover each day makes me sick. Try to stick in between both your work locations.
You may also want to think about duplexes. Better than condo or apartment living, IMHO... yes you're still connected to someone but it's a vast improvement over having someone living above or below you.
We lived in Saddle Brook, taxes were low for Bergen Cty. If we moved back I would live there again. Close to the highways, small town, like the schools.
