I just moved to Carteret, NJ from Florida. I am looking to make about $15 hour or 31,200 in New Jersey before taxes are taken out. If I was to accept a job in Manhattan, about how much more do you think I would need to make to even out on taxes. I am not talking about the time or cost of commuting, but just the tax issues. For example, If I made $2000 a month in NJ, about how much would I get after taxes living and working in NJ, compared to living in NJ and working in NYC?

Taxes are about the same.. they even out at tax time.. but for 15./hr you might want to look for something in NJ.. the commuting to the city might not be worth it.. it'll be about 6. each way *2 =12*5 = 60 * 4 = 240. a month.. that does not include the time commuting..

I was just wondering whether anyone can help me on one question I have regarding taxes. Let's say someone that is working in new jersey but lives in NY makes 55k per year. After taxes how much the pay will be on a weekly basis?

Just remember if you work in New York you will be subject to taxes there as well, which means you'll have to file a non resident return. I don't believe you get a total wash with the state of New Jersey when you pay taxes to N.Y. I would think if you stayed local (Carteret area and made 12-12.50 an hour you may be ahead of the game. Try checking in with a tax advisor. They might be able to help.

when you live in nj and work in nyc you pay state tax to new york. the rates there are generally higher, so you pay more. nj credits you for the taxes paid to new york, so it's basically a wash on that end.

there are some excellent payroll tax calculators online that can give you a quick snapshot of what you'll be taking home after taxes. here's one i use:
