I work in Roselle and used to live in Cranford...so I know the area pretty well. I really like TJ's and they are super cheap...their customer service is also excellent, which you do not get in a lot of grocery stores around there. I do a lot of my shopping at TJ's and a local health food store down the road from me where I live now. I really like a lot of the food and a lot of the stuff is very convient to make, and some of the fresh dinners and meets are pretty good. If you are mostly make your meals from scratch though - you probably want to a more general grocery store. TJ's is great for a lot speciality stuff, and basic stuff like organic ketchup...which is all inexpensive compared to other places...
One negative about TJ's, it can be very hit or miss and you have to fight for parking on the weekends and sometimes during the weekday at dinner time. Monday nights are the bext to go because they are usually fully stocked than.

I also make most of my food from scratch, and my love affair with Trader Joe's ended several years ago due to the incredible amount of packaging of their products - even their produce is wrapped in plastic. They do have some interesting and unique products at exceptional prices, but a lot of it is still just processed junk with exotic packaging. Like others have commented, every time I visit a TJ's it's a madhouse. I can't stand the crowds.
Now I only go twice a year or so if I'm out of town because there isn't a TJ's within 200 miles of where I live. I stock up on nuts, dried fruits, and things like that.

i was originally from NJ, but lived in vegas for 11 years...i just visit the nj forum every so often because i am interested in moving back after graduating and because i like to hear what people have to say about certain parts of the state, such as Elizabeth, Hillside, Newark, Bradley Beach, Freehold/Howell...I was born in Elizabeth, both my parents grew up in Elizabeth, Newark and Hillside, my grandmother had a house in Hillside, my other grandparents live in Bradley Beach but originally are from Elizabeth and Hillside, and we originally lived in Freehold/Howell for the first 6 years of my life and my father had a funeral home in Lakewood...just interested in hearing about how these places are now, as my parents have different memories...and just some places to live in the future...
sorry to hijack the thread and make it a little off topic...
On topic:
we have some friends from NJ, when they visit us in Las Vegas, they love going to our Trader Joe's, they say its better here...

I LOVE TRADER JOE'S!

LOVE IT.
It was soo crowded there!! You can buy prepared foods as they are very fresh!! They stock it seems every hour on the hour there! I see the stock clerks with hoards of food stocking all day long lol...takes me hours to get out of there!!! All fo the fruits and veggies are great too!
Their Fall foods are awesome --
try the PUMPKIN butter/pumpkin bread *you have to make it frm a box*..
Molasses cookies are awesome!!
Breaded chicken strips!! seafood crab cakes, ready to eat chicken parm! ALL the appetizers!! feta cheese/carmelized onion tartlets....mini beef and chicken tacos!and the list goes on endlessly in that area lol
Desserts- raspberry filled donuts, choc. ganache torte cake! *almost as good as mine from scratch!*, creme brulee, lemon tartlets, rice pudding/tapioca pudding lol...apple cider *fresh!*
YUM. The store rocks. I had one in Hyannis, MA where I first found it!so I would go there 2 times a week after work lol....

Trader Joes is unique because just about all of their products are private labeled - so it is going to at least be on the surface different than what you get at a regular grocery store.
My favorite supermarket is Fairway - which is unfortunately only in the city, and there is one store not far from me on Long Island. Now THAT is a great place to go to to get fresh produce, and whole food type ingredients, without paying Whole Food prices. I am thinking I am going to have to replace the produce by going to the local farmers markets out in NJ - not necessarily a bad thing.

You may already know this - but if you aren't that familiar with TJ's - (I know there are none down here) you may be familiar with Aldi's. They are somehow related- owned by brothers I think.
I love the blue cheese roasted walnut dip from TJ's also the sesame sticks.
