It varies. Some have a flat fee. Some charge by a certain distance. I know a lot of the cab companies charge a certain amount for ever 1/8th of a mile, here.

If you can't find anything in NJ, call NYC. Ask them if they'll go to NJ. Take public transport to the city - then take a cab home.

There is one in Rutherford that I called Saturday and asked and said I need to know for later and they said they do travel to NYC but I don't know how much they cost.

Its easier if taxis charge by the mile versus every 1/8th of a mile, is that only NYC taxis or what?

I know a taxi in cliffside park and fort lee and wouldn't come over my way cause they only pertain to the fort lee and new york area.

Well, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Keep calling around. You're bound to find someone who has a general idea of what they'll charge you.
