They are so on the move these days. Been seeing herds of them on the side of the road all over the place for the last few weeks. Mating season abounds.
BF will be out scouting the next couple weeks in PA. He prefers to hunt there, says Jersey is overcrowded and there are too many "weekend warrior" types.
Be careful driving out there. Also, remember if you see a deer dart across the road, most likely there will be others following.

Poor deer, have no where left to go! My sister lives in Oakland and she actually sees them walking down her road. She also has woods and no homes behind her. She sees a Mom with the babies come by her fence. I told her not to feed them. And that 287 hwy, they need to put a couple of crossover passes with dirt for the deer to go back and forth. So many get hit on that hwy. I know other states do it. You guys in Jersey should make a petition for it. If I was still living there I would.

There are so many deer around here I could go huntng with a sling shot and still get my limit.
They treat my efforts at landscaping as though I was putting out exotic salad greens just for them. Additionally, they are responsible for nearly all of the unsuccesfull attempts by passing motorists at knocking down roadside trees.
There are more deer in NJ now than there was before colonial times.
I say extend the deer season for as long as it takes to get the population in check.

Blondie Im on your side, I love the animals too. But your asking the govt to spend $50 million for a bridge so Deer can cross a highway? Yikes !!! We cant even get the govt to help feed the hungry, house the homeless or even force insurance companies in New Orleans and Galveston to pay homeowners claims which insurance companies are refusing to do.
But for your information there is one case in New Jersey of a bridge being built for animals to cross a road. Way back in the late 70s Interstate 78 was built but a missing 4 mile link remained for 8 years through the Watchung Reservation while the environmentalist idiots held it up in court. It took 8 years of state compromises with these nut cases (whom PETA also supported) before approvals were finally released and the highway was was finished with the animal crossing bridge. And may the motorists be damned.
For those who never seen one, its a normal looking bridge for us motorists who drive under it. On top it is a bridge deck with whatever earth is natural to the surrounding areas. Trees are added as well as wild bushes that is common to the surrounding areas also. There are sides high enough so that the Deer can never see below to the highway. They will never know they walked over a bridge.
A cheaper method to protect cars from Deer are fences which most major highways already have. It is not practical on minor roads.
Those Deer monitors you put on your bumper DO work. Any auto parts store sell them. Everyone should have one this time of year.

Jbrown I dont know about more Deer then Colonial times but a more accurate reason it seems that way is because of all the development NJ has seen in the past few decades. The poor Deer are being squeezed into smaller and smaller areas. Years ago you may not have seen as many because they had no need to come out of the woods, but they were there.
The thing that bothers me is when you see a new housing tract being built, they name the tract after the animals that once roamed the land but no longer do.
Deer Run Estates
Deer Creek
Turtle Trails Homes
Rattle Snake Park Estates
And so on.........
Im no hunter but I have to agree with you about extending the hunting season to thin the herds just a bit. Not everyone agrees with that.

I don't hunt either but the fact is, if conservation measures are too restrictive on hunting then Mother Nature will do conservation her way using starvation and disease. Not exactly a humane way for Bambi to go.
Plus, even more auto related deaths

Your right. So what is the answer? I dont hunt and I dont eat meat but I would not put down those who do. That being said, it is much more humane to shoot a Deer then it be hit by a car to die a slow death on the road. Shooting is also more humane then your mention of starvation due to not enough food to go around.
