If people had more self control, there wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar advertising industry. Don't blame TV for people being self-indulgent. Blame people.
As with most things, there is always plenty of blame to go around.

I do agree with you CuCullin. One thing that DOES tick me off (and I'm actually very involved in helping limit this) is the MARKETING that is geared toward children for these things. And it has been successful, but it's an uphill battle.

Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood Home

Has done some great things.

I don't disagree w/ you there, but I know MORE parents that are disgusted by this stuff than I do parents who are like "let's go get matching Mommy & Me s1ut ware together honey!" (Even though I do know the latter too....)

Exactly my viewpoint! 'Normal' people may not look at an 11 year old girl and lust after her in thighhighs, but has anyone been updated on the recent media lately? Child pornography, pedophiles and kidnapping, not to mention the childs self image. (Helllooo YES we as women should take care of our bodies but our esteem should not be based on sexual appeal....any yays? Any?)

Rob Riguez- 'Prosti-tots' is fabulously fitting...Im going to have to steal that word.

Mondays allllmost over...whew.

I agree with EEEP on this one.

I have children, three of them, but none are girls. So I had two Indian Jones costumes going on and the baby was dressed like a pumpkin.

There was only one group of girls who came trick-or-treating to my house that I had to wonder if anyone was home when they left the house dresed the way they were.

My friends with girls tell me that it's not always an easy task, especially in the summer, to find age-appropriate/non-little hoochie-mama clothing for their daughters.

And when I see these short-shorts that give Daisy Dukes a run for their money on pre-teens/teen girls I just wonder...pretty much, WHY? I've seen butt cheeks peeking through (b/c I'm reading their behinds...you know, those shorts with writing across the rear?).

Maybe it's just me. I grew up in the 80's when it was all about baggy clothing and every shirt/sweater you owned HAD to cover your behind.

Oh - the words across the @ss. LOL
My friend told his teenage daughter, "The DAY you have anything written across your but, I'm going out, buying a pair of JUICY jeans, with JUICY across the @ss, 2 sizes too small, and I will wear them EVERY time your friends come over, and EVERY time I take you to school and so on and so forth..." LOL

Last year I went off on a totally underserving salesperson trying to find an age appropriate dress for my daughter. I didn't want "frou frou" but it was that or black spanex and spaghetti straps (for a then SIX year old!!!!) NOW, I'm not stupid, I know the moronic designers and marketers would not put this out there if there were not PATHETICLLY moronic parents out there willing to buy them... so basically, they should all be exiled!

I just want to point out that me and MPB and Jersey G and all are AGREEING. Where is NJKate and Nicole???? They told me I'm NEVER moderate. LOL
Actually, I'm not - I can just go either way...

lol--I could admit that it's the conventional wisdom in some areas/among some populations at least.

The problem is that the conventional wisdom isn't correct just because it's the conventional wisdom. And just going along with it because it's far easier (and trying to fight the conventional wisdom often seems futile or even detrimental to onself in the early stages) just doesn't sit well with me.

It's not a matter of accuracy/inaccuracy, but rather that studies are assigned weight by me proportionate to how tenable I consider the foundational beliefs embedded in them . . . but that's a philosophy of science issue that has little to do with the OP.

No, I really disagree here. People have a choice.

People are to blame. If EVERYONE acted EXACTLY the same after watching a TV show.... then the TV show would be to blame. But what SOME people do is indulge themselves stupidly (which many here have referred to as "greed" when it comes to this market), while others act responsibly.

"The media" has nothing to do with it.
