I might take a job in Rahway. My daughter is turning 16. We need add another car. I know that the car sale tax in NJ is 6%, our state now is 3%. I read on some website if you buying a hybrid car in NJ, you do not have to pay sale tax. Is that true? I did not see this anywhere in DMV website. Also how is the public transportation there? Do we need 3 cars in one house? Say if we live in Westfields and work in Rahway. My wife will work. My teenager goes to high school may work part-timely. Does she need a car?

Thanks

I did a little looking around as I'm sure you can do also and i see talk about such things being proposed but I found no evidence that NJ has such a policy at this time.

Aside from that...let's talk practical. Lets say this hybrid costs $25,000, Assume you get all 7% sales tax wiped off the bottom line...that's equal to $1750.
Is that all it would take to talk you into buying a little car that on it's very best day takes 10 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph (data from Toyota site). And then there's the long term issues such as battery replacement costs and trade in value , special knowledge to repair these things. etc etc

No thanks.

It has about another federal tax credit for ~$3000. Plus you never know how much gas price will go up next a few years. It is slow to accelerate, but my wife will be the driver. That will not be my problem .

That tax credit of $3000 is going down to half this year to $1600. It's the new tax law they implemented on all hybrids. If you see a chart on the tax breaks for 2006... cut it in half when you purchase a new hybrid this year. Nope... we're not addicted to oil.
