Paterson may not be much at the moment, but it was once something very special, and instead of people running away even from it's name, it could become something special again.
if i were still a WP resident i would have voted against the name change.
In time they will.

Over the other bridge, does your family still call that town "East Paterson"? Maybe in the 70s, but everyone today says, "Elmwood Park."

In time, Woodland Park will prevail too.

It depends. The vote on the change the municipality's name passed by less than 35 votes; it wasn't an overwhelming majority. That means there are still plenty of people who want to keep the name as West Paterson. My guess is that the name will technically be Woodland Park, but colloquially called West Paterson.

I think that "Woodland Park" should get together with Little Falls and Totowa and discuss renaming their high school. After all, many people might associate Passaic Valley Regional High School with the city of Passaic!

It feels good being back on city-data after my 3 month hiatus!

Wow, they are really serious about this. At my job, I was registering a new patient into the system and when I typed in her address, the computer had the option of putting Woodland Park into her profile instead of West Paterson. She said West Paterson, so that is what I chose.

I was also reading the Herald News yesterday and they had an article on consolidating certain services for towns in Passaic County. They mentioned the town with the W.P. initials as "Woodland Park (formerly West Paterson)".

^^^ And how much money is Woodland Park, is spending on this name change? In this day and age of towns and cities facing major cuts in their treasury, I find it crazy people would actually want a name change. I personally believe that all of these "6 block x 8 block" towns should all merge or at least sharve services. Though, that will never happen. Can you imagine, if Woodland Park were forced to merge with Paterson?

Old thread, but I was wondering: Now that Paterson is going to be home to a National Park, Center City is almost complete, NJ Transit is planning on running a light rail system through the city, and Paterson may turn into the next "it" city, if Paterson were to become the next big thing, would Woodland Park change its name to West Paterson, again?

Yeah, the Toms River thing was a long time coming since NOBODY ever actually referred to it as Dover Twp. I grew up here and it's always been that way. The mailing address has always been Toms River, NJ and the school district has always been the Toms River Regional School District. The high schools have always been T.R. North, East and South. The only real reference to "Dover" was the "Dover Shores" section of Toms River.

As far as South Belmar becoming Lake Como, it was partly to disassociate itself from Belmar and its wild summer party town status, but mostly it was really to allow the town to have its own identity rather than just sounding like it was part of another town. The disassociation with Belmar was really more of a side thing.

Another interesting one would be Neptune City (Borough) changing its name to disassociate itself from Neptune Township, known for its gangs, illegal aliens, etc. Neptune City, ironically, is a suburban town while Neptune Twp. is the iffy community next door.
