My husband and I are looking to buy in Morris County and need to be somewhat close to 287, so towns further west, like Randolph, will add too much commuting time for us (I'm heading north to Rockland, NY and my husband is heading south to Cherry Hill). Our max is 450K and we're having a lot of trouble finding something "decent" in a decent area. We're looking for a 3/4 bedroom, 2 bath house in a nice, safe neighborhood with children - good schools are a plus. We heard great things about Montville, Madison, Whippany, etc but there isn't anything in these nice towns that we can afford. Does anyone know anything about Morris Plains? We just heard about it today. We also like Bernardsville in northern Somerset but no luck there either with our limited budget. Any advice is appreciated.

How about Boonton? The homes in your price range will be somewhat older, but there are decent ones to be had. 287 runs right through town with several exits. I have friends in that town with small children. It's not the ritziest area in Morris co. but they've found it to be safe and comfortable. They bought a nice cape cod style house last year for somewhere around $400,000.

That's going to be an awful commute from Morris county to Cherry Hill though, even if you're seconds off rt. 287. Probably like 1 hr 45 min each way of driving for Cherry Hill? I hope he has a great paying job, that commute would drive me nuts.

try long hill very close to the area's you like. Have not looked at the mls but maybe there is one also east hanover, some parts of parsippany, whippany areas. All pretty close to 287.

Thank you JohnZ963 and Stevemorse for responding. Will look into Boontown and Long Hill. Yeah, our commuting situation is not the best. We live in Freehold now and it takes hubby an hour to Cherry Hill but used to take me 2-3 hours EACH way to Rockland, NY (am on maternity leave until Feb). Can't be doing that with a newborn so we're moving north so I can be closer to work. I'll still have about an hour but now my hubby will take on the longer commute. He is self-employed and can work from home a few days so by the time we move, he probably will only do the commute 1-2 days, which isn't so bad. Thanks again!

I agree with the few suggestions others gave but all I have to say is:

You better hope gas dont go back up to $4.00 again. Your weekly gas bill will be $200 or more with a commute like that. Not to mention you will never get to see eachother.

I hear you DesertSun. We've been doing it for three years already. I was filling up my car every other day. It's definitely not easy but we have to pay the bills and try to make the best of it. That may change in a couple of more years, after we've finished having children. Given the current market, we're hanging on to our jobs even more. So we'll see...

Long Hill is very nice by the way!! I did a drive thru the area and like it alot. Your close to everything and 287. Its a little gem of a town with three different sections, called Millington, Sterling and Gillette. Its pretty nice. Houses are not over the top in price but your close to all the over the top stuff so its like you got the best of both worlds.

please let us know where you like? You know once in a while a see a good little steal in Basking Ridge! Its not too often but you bet you may in this market get that little deal!!! Long Hill is right next to Basking Ridge and Harding and Chatham, its such a cute good little area.

Let us know what you find too many times people never give us the ending of the town they pick! Good luck

I just looked at garden state mls, and saw 3 houses with nice property too, all 3/4 bedroom 2 bath. I also saw a really cute one at your price range, now a little out of budget but with a good bargain or deal skills you never know!! So look a little higher too. So there are a few options in Long Hill. Check out the mls go to Garden state mls and do a search. By the way they were not total wrecks. Also check out the one at 499K I bet you could bargain them down ? Nice lot and nice garage!!! But a few cute houses in your price range. This is a town that I think is gonna boom when everything comes back.
