Default NJ Unemployment Insurance

I'm happily employed but in this economy who knows what the future may bring? I have a question:

I live in NJ, work in NY. My employer takes out NY state taxes.

Am I eligible to collect unemployment insurance in NJ?

No.

And I would be pretty pissed if you could.

*EDIT*

Do you mean if you lost your job? Thats not how I read that....

If you lost your job, then yes. NY taxes get applied to NJ state taxes at the end of the year, you still pay NJ taxes, you'd still qualify if you got laid off.

Default I'm no slacker

Yeah, of course I meant if I lost my job. I would happily pay into the NJ SUI (I think that's the deduction) but it simply isn't offered by my employer.

In NJ, they are two different line items. NJ Income Tax, and NJ SUI. I think I'm right about that.

I know the tax I pay NY state will get to NJ when I file, but I am unclear if I'm covered if I have to collect unemployment. I don't pay into a separate NY SUI, but they may not even have one.

Default follow up question

My employer informed me today that they will be cutting everyone's work week to 4 days a week instead of the 5 we work now. In effect eliminating 8 hours from everyone's pay. It will only be for a 1-2 month period. (this will not affect medical benefits)

My question is, will i be eligible for unemployment for the 5th day which they are cutting. I read somewhere that some states actually allow for this. Anyone have any thoughts? I have been on hold with the unemployment office for over an hour now and no response. Thanks.

Ben

Back when I worked in NY and lived in NJ, I got laid off. I filed for unemployment in NY (I think I had to file there, because that's where I had worked). Checks were mailed to my home in NJ of course.

You can claim weekly (1-2 weeks) for UI, but not for a single day.

If you're worried about cash, pick up a PT job the off day.

My friends who worked in NY and got laid off filed in NY.

Pretty sure it is where you work, not where you live...

For your other question.........

I think the answer is no....

Is the MAX unemployment benefit MORE than what you will get paid for a 4 days work week???

NO! You are not unemployed. While unemployed, a person may work P/T and still collect, with the pay limits changing.
