Need info on moving to cape may, nj!!!!!!
Hi, I am looking to move to Cape May within the next 6-8 months but I can't find any information on what it is like to live there. I am a 27 year old single female and want to know if the area has alot to offer 20-somethings and also how the dating scene is. What is the average income and housing prices (rentals)? I have a B.S. and work in Procurement currently so I am not too worried about finding a job. What would be the average pay for that area of work? The only info I can find on the area is related to vacations opposed to actually living life there!! Can anyone please tell me honestly is Cape May a great place to live and the reasons why it is or isn't!!!

My parents recently moved to New Jersey, and I visited Cape May a few times while staying with them this summer. It is an absolutely beautiful town, tons of amazing Victorian homes, nice restaurants, pretty beaches, etc. However, it struck me as a terribly impractical place to actually live. The town is extremely tourist oriented, and seemed to lack the necessities I would need to live comfortably. The locals were easy to pick out, and dwarfed in number by the crowds of tourists (at least in the town center) which I would find rather annoying living there. It is also very far south at the end of the NJ Turnpike, quite far from other major towns, so I would take into account the extra driving the location may force you to do if you would need to go into the city often or like to go shopping or something. Unfortunately I don't know the town well enough to really offer sound advice, but these are at least things to consider. If you're set on NJ, and want to be somewhere nice, you might also consider Long Beach Island. It is much closer to Atlantic City, good shopping, and other necessities, and has a few high-end towns that blow Cape May out of the water (though none of it is really low-end, small cottages are $500k in the cheaper parts). Hope this helps...back to being bored... XD

Cape May is a family town, not much singles scene and lots of tourists. You'd be better off in Belmar or Red Bank.

Living in Cape May
This is a place to visit, not to live. I pay $1,200 a month rent for a two bedroom apartment. Lots of younger folks are paying $900 and living in someone's attic or converted garage. Wages are very low and you may be laid off at the end of the tourist season. The crime rate is high in surrounding towns and home in Cape May will cost you at least $400,000. The dating scene is bad with lots of drinkers and those who only work six months a year. It's a beautiful place to live but it is awful in the winter. The wind blows like the North Pole. The recession has given us two bad tourist seasons.

I'm curious. If you are in the process of "finding a job", why have you chosen Cape May? Have you been there as a tourist?
I'd stick to Red Bank, Belmar, or Sea Bright.
