If you could use a time machine...
This is not fun game, but I am trying to imagine what to expect for 2009 and onward. Nothing but depressing economic news from every angle, the 700billion bailout is beeing called a drop in the bucket.
see here: http://www.moneyandmarkets.com/files...hite-Paper.pdf
What is in store for the humans:
empty stores, tent cities, civil wars, raging crime
I have never been trough a recession, can't even imagine a depression...
I am thinking of starting to plant potatos and veggies in the backyard, plus get a cow and some chickes...
This is a scary time and I am wondering what others think...

I'm thinking that I can't worry about it, and I need to focus on not getting in that situation, otherwise, I am already doomed. Can't worry about what I can't control. CAn only worry about what I can control. If you try to focus on what you can't control, you'll drive yourself insane.

To put I simply, I'm keeping my nose to the grindstone, spending and giving wisely and attempting to enjoy some aspects of each day.

Just so y'all know, I was not being rude! LOL! I only asked the age because as an almost 40 yr old (few months away...oy...) I just wanted to see if 86 was one of our very young 'uns. (I'm not disclosing your age 86!)
I have seen some of the early 20's crowd who have never been through this...they tend to be ultra scared or in complete denial. I have a friend who is a principal at a major architectural firm. They were figuring out what worthy employees to cut because they had too, when a young 'un came in and demanded a raise. She was like "Are you KIDDING me?" That's the denial type (and he was cut....)
As an almost 40ite... we've seen recessions. The 70's sucked. I remember being pretty broke. I remember not having a phone for a while and no lights too because my parents just did not have the $ and no jobs and not for lack of trying. When Mom landed a job she was receptionist for a local company and it broke her heart how people came in begging for work. She would tell us how men in expensive suits with degrees from top schools would come in and say "Even if you have a janitorial position..I just need to feed my kids."
Then there was after the "crash" in '87. That was a yuppie recession... meaning it hurt the yuppies most of all and forgive me if I didn't have much sympathy. That and the early 90's - it was a pretty fast recovery and I don't think we were too much worse for the wear.
THIS is a little more scary. First, it's global. Second, it's big. Third, I don't see any immediate quick fix (no "dot com" about to temporarily save the day...)
But I think we'll be ok.
I think, in many ways, this is a GOOD thing. People had become much too greedy & materialistic, especially in this area. It's not about having a new Hummer and a McMansion and all the expensive extras. We all need a little lesson in reality.
Now, if in a year I'm in one of those tent city's, I'll feel differently!

Good post. The 70s and early 80s were tough. I remember selling cold soda on gas lines for some extra pocket money. I also remember how a big dinner was made on Sundays and spread for a few days so that mom/dad wouldn't have to light the oven more than once. Our gas bill was high and mom and dad rationed where they could.
Your almost 40 pal too!

If I had a time machine I wouldn't go forward, I'd go back. I'd buy Intel & Microsoft and Yahoo. Then I would sell and put all my money under my mattress since we never know what bank is going to go under next.
Yes, hind sight is 20/20.
So what will we be talking about 5 years from now?...too much speculation. One day at a time, I say.

I am slightly younger than you guys - but I can remember my parents cursing because someone siphoned their gas during the gas crisis - though I wasn't quite old enough to know what was going on.
