We are looking to move to NJ . Commute to nyc to work. Young couple with a baby . Looking for something no more than $200.000 .We are looking in Middlesex county, Monmouth county or anywhere in NJ. As long as commute to nyc doesn't take longer than 1hour 30min or so. Def looking for a nice family friendly area, good schools(public and/or private) Safe. Not too close to the water(scared of flooding)

Thanks in advance

You are going to have a hard time in your price range, I think...

Sorry Tamta, that challenge will be nearly impossible to complete. It may be possible to get an old small garden apartment style condo in some OK towns for that price, or you may be able to find a mobile home in that price range. Or maybe in some more rural towns in Sussex County (be prepared for a real modest, isolated house or condo) or way down South Jersey (which would make your commute more than 90 minutes).

But in reality, houses in NJ's toughest towns go for more than $200,000.

You will have a very tough time finding anything in the top 3/4 of the state for $200,000. Maybe not impossible, but very difficult. Try checking Realtor.com for some ideas. Good luck!

Would you consider a condo or a townhome (more likely a condo) instead?

Hi there!

I agree with the other posters regarding the price point you are looking for. Even with the down market most places are going to be well north of that for any single-family home, even the small ones with minimal land.

You may want to check out Hightstown which is located in Southern Middlesex County. The townhomes and apartment-style condos EEPNJ mentioned can start around 200K in Hightstown but do go up from there. The area is relatively quiet and has just about all of the parameters you are seeking.

For reference, I'm in South Brunswick which is about twenty minutes from Hightstown.

I hope this helps.

NJ is one of the most expensive states to live in. I can tell you from personal experience, that was about my price range and I had a really tough time. I had to go over 200 K.

Rahway does have some homes on Realtor.com but I don't know if I'd stay into middle school years and high school years- you'll need to look at school at that time. Also, not all areas are that nice- you'll have to go and drive around.

Maybe down in Cliffwood Beach, Keyport, Union Beach- all affordable and close to alot of things. Schools, not the best, but I'm sure not the worst.

The price range and good schools- possible. Great schools- will be nearly impossible.

RUNYYfan- Actually, Hightstown is a small borough in East Windsor which is in Mercer Co.
It is very close to exit 8A and has the Park and Ride on Rte 130.

A town home/condo for 2K is probably quite viable in East Windsor.

East Brunswick - school is good, and the commute to NYC is good I heard - just hop on a bus and sleep. There are 2-bedroom condos under $200K in East Brunswick.

Plainsboro (very good school, go to Princeton Junction train station for commute, but parking space at the train station is hard to get, perhaps you can drop your husband off). There are some 2-bedroom condos under $200,000, but affordable housing (sale/rent) are also available from time to time - you either have to act fast, and/or wait long.

Middlesex County MLS Middlesex County Multiple Listing System - MLS

Affordable housing info here: Piazza & Associates Inc.
And here: New Jersey Housing Resource Center

If I were you, I'd rent for a year or two though (look at craigslist for rental). Not everyone likes the change. Good luck!!!
