Owning a Boat - worth it ???
Considering that I reside approximately 3 blocks from Liberty Harbor, I am mulling over the idea of purchasing a boat. I'd like to hear from boat owners...is it worth it?? Is maintenance too much of a PITA? What is required for maintenance?

If the water is in your harbor it's probably thick enough to walk on, let alone boat thru.
I'll tell you this, get a boat and you will have friends for life!

Well owning a boat is alway nice I for one have a nice boat which i use primarily for fishing purposes or the occassional cruise with friends/fam. You have to think about how often you plan on using the boat and weigh out if it is personally worth the investment (boat costs, gas, insurance, maintenance). As far as maintenance goes it depends on what kind of setup you are running; inboard, outboard, or in/outboard. From my experience inboards tend to require the most maintenance which is why I have dual Mercury outboards. Never cause any real issues, you just have to remember that it is a motor and oil changes are needed. The only breakdowns my friends ever have are occassional pump issues, but I have yet to experience any. Best of luck.

Thanks! Where do you dock your boat? Any idea what it would cost for me to dock it at Liberty Marina in JC?? Also, what is required for an oil change...can I do it myself??

The 2 happiest days of a boat owners life.
The day they buy it and the day they sell it.

What you should do is walk to the water each Saturday and throw all the cash in your wallet into the water. When this no longer bothers you, your ready to own a boat .

I heard this same thing on BBC Radio 2 this morning!
My dad has a boat. Has had one for years. He is trying to sell his now, as his health is kind of keeping him from enjoying it as much as he would like.
What kind of boat do you want? Ski boat/fishing boat? Houseboat/Cruiser? Sail boat?

Well I am no where near you lol I currently have my dock slip down at a marina in Pt Pleasant Beach since I use my boat from March-November being that my summer house is close to the dock. Oil change is just as it sounds, changing the oil. And yes you can do it yourself, it's very easy and you can find countless articles online how to do it. As I said, the older the motor the more problems you will face.

A boat is a hole in the water, lined with fiberglass, into which you pour money...

in some cases yes, but if you truly have a passion for the water/fishing/cruising then it's an even trade off. My boston whaler has yet to give me any problem and have owned it for over 3 years now. Knock on wood
