I'm looking for a 2bd rental something around $1000. within a reasonable commute to NYC. Not that picky but something west of 287 that's safe & quiet. Preferably with a minimum of crack dens & gangs. What towns should I be considering? I'm looking at Butler, Whippany, Parsippany, Dover, Brookside, Hopatcong, Netcong.

Forget Dover if you don't want the crack dens and gangs... Butler is getting there too.

I'm not familiar with Brookside, Hopatcong or Netcong... so can't help you there.

I would look in Rockaway. I lived in an apartment there for about 2 years and had no problems at all. It was called Hillside Gardens. I think it would be about $1200 for a bedroom though.

I live in Sayreville and have only heard bad things about Winding Wood. The weekly police blotter always has numerous incidents out of there. However, there are lots of other safe areas in town.

If you are just renting and have no kids in the schools I don't think there is much difference. If you were looking to buy and bring up a family, Whippany would win hands down. That said, I think you are going to have a hard time finding a 2 bed apt for $1,000 in either place.

Parsippany has a lot of apartments to choose from and I think you can find something in your price range. Convenient, flexible location.
