I want to turn it off, but like a bad movie I have to find out how this whole thing ends. He sends this little boy racing around for shoes before his mother dies. That's some real holiday spirit, huh? So much for the kid enjoying Christmas that year.

"I spent my Christmas with all of my family"

"I spent my Christmas eating pie and opening gifts"

"I spent my Christmas playing with my toys"

"I spent my Christmas running around looking for shoes for my dying mother"

WTF???????????????????????????

Why shoes???? Wouldn't something like a necklace or a ring or a gown be better than shoes?????? And since the mother was sick and fading away, it's a sure shot that the mom never makes it. I don't even know if the mother got the shoes in time! Does she? That would really suck for the kid if she walked in on a flat lining mother (look who's left holding the bag of shoes now, pally!). This song doesn't evoke anything close to the warm and fuzzies. The kid will always be scarred for many Christmases to come, and will probably need some sort of therapy later in life, trying to deal with associating a festive time of year and his mom dying. And then there's what the listener is left with. Screw the kindness of the kid, all that you're left with is the image of a dead mother and her stupid shoes, all wrapped up in what's supposed to be a Christmas song. A song like that played right alongside of, "It's the most wonderful time of the year", or, "Have a holly jolly Christmas"...

Again, I say WTF???????????

The only thing that could've rescued that song is if the kid got the wrong size shoe and the store had a no return policy. At least it would allow me to listen to it through till the end and not rushing to turn it off every time it comes on.
OMG +1

I SO agree! I was like "There is SO much wrong with this song!" First, if your mother is dying BE with her, don't worry about buying her ANYTHING because if there is ONE time in life we realize materialism is useless it's before death. And it's SO pathetically sappy - like that horrendous Butterfly Kisses song. HURL.

Funny thing is, my sis and I (who are emotional types) HATE these songs. HATE them. Drives us to violence I swear. But our DH's (who are not so emotional...well, hers is more than mine, but still) they call all misty on us every time it comes on and we're like "You make me sick."

Thank God it's them instead of you (I don't want it to be ANYONE personally...)

BAD lyrics. But yes, takes me back to HS too. And all the fun we had trying to figure out who sang each part. Let's see, of that group - who is still relavent?

Bono & Sting....
Someone living near the base of Mt Kilmanjaro might want to dispute this!

I had to resurrect this thread because there's a song I just started hearing that would give "shoes" a run for its' money. Faith Hill's - "A Baby Changes Everything" - what a schlockey piece of crap!!!!! I don't even know why it's considered a Christmas song?!?!?!

Has anyone else heard it?! It's an "ear-bleed" song.

I had never heard this song before, until yesterday. I have to say this is one of the very best xmas songs I've ever heard. I've been playing it constantly all day today.

I realize this thread is almost six years old but I too love 2000 Miles by the Pretenders. Natalie Imbruglia and Mighty Might Bosstones both released covers and they are good versions.
