I'd suggest Monmouth County, too. So many people that live here commute to NYC, particularly from the Bayshore area, you may like Holmdel.
It's about 40 min to Newark Airport and depending on mode of transportation it averages an hour to the city. A lot of people opt for the ferry to work.

Yeah, Haddonfield is way too far. Thanks, though.
River Edge and Oradell are both good thoughts. Thank you very much for the offer, Antoinette, but I am using some web sources on school performance that are great.
I've found many great places about an hour from Penn Station. Its pretty incredible how much is out there. People on this site have been so helpful, thank you all--especially you, Ira.
Now I think I have to begin the long and laborious process of narrowing things down.

In my opinion, you should stick with Essex County (Glen Ridge / Montclair / Nutley), all close to the city with good schools. I am partial to Monmouth County, having grown up in Marlboro, but the commute on the bus is a killer (1.5 hrs average each way). Someone on this board said 45 minutes, that is going 75 mph with no cars on the road.

You didn't read my post correctly. I said it takes 45 minutes to get to Newark Airport. I've lived in Monmouth County just about all my life, and have done that trip numerous times, and that's what it takes.
Also wanted to add you can take the train, ferry, or bus to commute. You are best off with the train or ferry from my husband's experience of doing the Manhattan commute everyday.

You are correct, 45 minutes from Marlboro to Newark Airport. I was speaking about Marlboro to Manhattan.

East Brunswick school system is supposedly the best in the state. LIke others have said, Monmouth County also has a good school system. Your best bet is MIddlesex or Monmouth County.

I think I would love living in Monmouth or Middlesex...except for the distance from NYC. If commutability weren't a factor I would look long and hard at them though.

It's only an hour by train (well 1:10) to NYC. It's not so bad!

I looked at NJtransit, and I can't find any train to Holmdel. Is this one of those deals where you have to drive to the train?
Hmm...I can't seem to edit. Anyway, I also couldn't find any ferry info with a Google search. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
