Moving to NJ - HELP!
My husband and I will be moving to NJ in June. We need to be fairly close to Newark, but DO NOT want to live there. Where should we start looking? We are coming from the Mid-West; so a nice safe suburban area is where we will probably feel most comfortable. We would like to spend around $1500 per month on rent and must have at least one bedroom, but would prefer two if possible. Are there any apartment complexes or town home communities out there? If so are they in our price range? Also, I must be able to do my own laundry in my own place - not community. We need all the help we can get, so any replies would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I went to school at Seton Hall University in South Orange and was pretty much surrounded by Newark. There are some very nice areas you can live within a reasonable commute into Newark. If you want to be very close, but still have a nice community, try S. Orange, Maplewood, Millburn, ShortHills.
A bit further north you can still have a 20 minute commute from lower bergen county and towns like Moonachie, Rutherford, Carlstadt, WoodRidge, Hasbrouck Heights.
Towns like Nutley and Bloomfield might fit your needs as well.
There are many roads into Newark, and even 15-20 minutes away can put you in a lovely neighborhood.
Good Luck to you.

i dont mean to pry but why are you moving to New Jersey? This state sucks. High real estate, high property taxes, corrupt politicians. I would stay away from NJ. Pennsylvania is a better bet.

They are not buying-just renting. I don't think they are concerned with property taxes and corruption-just commuting and laundry- if you bother to read their short post.

Uhhh....could it be because they're not willing to spend 1 1/2-2 hours each way commuting to Newark every day from Pennsyltucky?

There's plenty of places in Woodbridge and Edison that are within your budget, including many that are within walking distance of the train to Newark (if that's something you would use). I can't comment on the laundry in the unit, but most of the newer units have it.

I love in East Rutherford, and am less than 20 minutes to Newark, the towns around here would fit in with your budget and are nice, Rutherford is very well to do area, but you can find a 2 bedroom for about 1500 a month, and wallington, caralstadt, woodridge, you can probably find more for your money. I would definitly stay away from Rahway, big prison for sex offenders and Edison, those two are like cities with a lot of crime. Hope this helps. Good Luck

My daughter, husband, and grandson just moved to Scotch Plains from South Philly. They found a 2 br, 1 and 1/2 bath house for $1,400 per month. The upstairs is rented out with a private entrance. The kids have the downstairs, full finished basement, laundry room, backyard, shed, and driveway as part of their rent. It's on a nice quiet street, great neighbors, and when I flew out of the Newark airport, it was about an 18 mile drive. I was impressed.
