What GA is trying to say (aptly named by the way) is that as long as you name your child "Piece of S---," "F---ing worthless, or "Should Never Have Been Born," its ok. I'm sure he believes that flag burning should be allowed too.

Nope! I'm not saying it's ok. I'm saying legally it's the parent's right despite the fact that the name might be objectionable or offensive to individuals or groups in our "society". Those individuals or groups no matter how much they complain and protest, have no legal recourse under our present laws to correct, censure or prevent parents from naming a child anything they want.
It seems a little ridiculous but let's look at the question you do not ask but allude to:
1. Should "society" determine which children's names could or could not be used?
2. Should the law be changed so that only approved names for children be used?
3. What parameters would determine acceptability?
4. Who would judge which names are acceptable and how do we determine that they are qualified?

What we do have is a pretty good idea of what abuse is and is not. If a parent spanks their child as punishment, that's not abuse-it's discipline. If you chain your kid to a radiator and beat him with a tire iron, THAT'S abuse.

No. As it stands right now, "society" doesn't determine in hard and fast definitions (ie: specific acts) what physical, mental, or emotional abuse is either, but we know that if a kid let's say comes into the classroom with cigarette burns all over his arms, or seems to exhibit signs of mental or emotional abuse, alarm bells should be ringing.

Look, I get it, you're one of these people who believes you should be able do whatever you want with your kid and for the most part I'm with you. I got smacked around as a kid for the most part I deserved it and am better for it. I learned to handle guns at a fairly young age and did other things that parents today would probably consider inappropriate for a child to do (chopping wood, running a chainsaw, using power tools, driving a tractor, etc...), but I believe that the brainwashing that these parents are engaging in (with the naming being all a part of the game) can be considered abuse. I know, I know, slippery slope, the next thing you know Big Brother is going to come and get you because you let your kid watch South Park...I think that's a lot different than teaching your child to worship a mass murderer who slaughtered 6 million people.

Come on Mike. It's not an argument in the NJ forum, it's a discussion.

You're both right but in a court of law, GA would be the winner.

It is wonderful to have that freedom but awful when someone abuses it to name their kid after one of the most hateful people ever. I can't believe people would stick up for the right to do that.
