Thanks for the tip. I will check out Burlington. He basically wants to be somewhat near the shore, near a good community college and/or university. Not a remote area. Access to transportation and activities that 20 year old's like to participate in. I was thinking about Seaside but read opinions on it on another thread on City Data, which have discouraged me.

it's kind of funny how "outsiders" run up and down the jersey turnpike and/or watch the saprano's and assume jersey's a dump. what we have here, is some of the most sought after real estate in the country and some ridiculous money... a lot of the heavy hitters from nyc "hang there hats" in jersey.
i agree with some of the other posters... extreme northwest jersey is laid back, rural, friendly and reasonably priced, northeast is wound tighter, a little less friendly and somewhat pricey, whereas northwest/central is sort of laid back, pretty friendly and definitely pricey and south is wayyyy more laid back, friendlier and the most reasonably priced. no matter where you live in the state it's nice and the shore points are not all that far... certainly worth the trip.
if your son's thinking cape may, he'd better not mind driving long distances to work or anywhere for that matter... it's the southern most part of the state and rural. it takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours, WITHOUT TRAFFIC, to get up to the north central area of the state, where most people work. it's a real beautiful area, but so secluded.
in a nut shell, wherever they look in jersey they'll find something nice... it's really a great state, except for the taxes, tolls and trenton. good luck... have a good one.

Yes, I would rather gather Roots n' Herbs than inhale vehicular exhaust. We lived in East Tennessee until last summer. Moved to eastern MA. My son tells me that Southern Jersey is more like the SOUTH.

Thanks !

if your son's girlfriend is in hamilton, he might want to look along the jersey shore in manasquan, pt. pleasant, belmar, wall township and those areas. there is nj transit trains to ny, county colleges, lots of things to do, not far from atlantic city, or cape may, and pretty safe. the summers get more noisy because of all the tourists but a twenty year old would love that. have him look at a map and go from there.
good luck to him.

The climate is milder in NJ than in MA, and the people tend to be warmer. I live right outside of Boston now, and oh dear, this winter has been hard so far and it has barely even started.

Point Pleasant Borough, Point Pleasant Beach, Brick, Bricktown, Toms River, or Bayville. Close to transportation and Ocean County College.

Hi
Just moved to Nj in Sept with my family. Hubby is from N. Plainfield area. Live in Bridgewater. Very safe and nice. Warren, Martinsville, Berkeley Heights, Watchung, Basking Ridge, all nice areas that I have visited and seen. Love the Bedminister area though and trying to move up there for next school year. Northern Jersey seems so nice, especially north of 22.
Still looking around shore area myself for safe kids friendly areas.
Good luck. Hope this helps.
