Seaside is not the best area because it is more of a vacation town so in the off season the renters are usually transient. However, Toms River and Brick are large cities right next door. 15 minutes to the beach...boating, fishing, surfing, etc. They are always listed among the safest cities in the country. Ocean County Community College is right in Toms River. They are 90 minutes from NYC, 1 hr from Philadelphia and Atlantic City. The pace is a little slower than northern NJ.

I live in the best part of new jersey in Hunterdon county. I would recomend it (except high cost of living). Flemington is pretty DAWGONE nice to live in and its an hour to the shore, hour to new york, hour to Philly. Wait seems like thats the same everywhere in Jersey. Hmmm DONT GO NEAR TRENTON. Thats the place that validates all of the danger talk you hear about. Its bad. By the way Newark is a bad hell hole too for the most part.

Thanks for your response Isthistaken. Brick is quickly becoming my choice. Other than Craig's list, would you have any suggestions as to where I could look for rentals? The local paper I guess, wouldn't you say?
Are there any colleges or universities in the area? Any observations on jobs/employment in the area?
I am so greatful to everyone on this forum being so helpful.

Red Dove,
Look in Central Jersey, Somerset County, Middlesex County. Rutgers is really close by. You are within an hour of the shore and it will be good for jobs as it's centrally located to everywhere.
Craigslist is great to find places to live.

Yes, I live in Beverly - MA. There's been quite a bit of snow, not as bad as Chicago though. A few days ago, the temp along with wind chill was -18%. My son, an avid cyclist went to the beach on his bicycle. Crazy. Had his first experience of frost bite.
