For the one that said the smell was coming from the tires of the car.
Antifreeze has that smell.

Yes it does! Good observation... now maybe the DEP should be looking for an antifreeze release?

Wiley,
That's the first thing that came to my mind. For it to be that strong that all of these people for miles around are smelling it, that's concerning.
I would definitely call DEP and strongly request an answer to the odor. Whenever it smells like syrup, I panic. But in my neighborhood, it's either a neighbor's radiator or someone being dumb and putting out antifreeze for the nuisance animals.

Well antifreeze is used in boilers in the winter to keep pipes from freezing. Perhaps some large factory discharged the antifreeze into the river - maintenance on the boiler??? Flushing out the system??? Ok, you and I are heading to trenton to edjumacate the DEP

Well one good thing...antifreeze today is non-toxic! I did find one manufacturer in Bayonne - downwind of NYC and one recycling plant in Astoria. Perhaps one of these two companies is the responsible party : ))

I think this maple syrup odor is closely related to the butterscotch odor that can often be detected on Rt. 280 between Harrison and Jersey City.
Maple syrup and butterscotch?
Clearly, Willy Wonka is out and about, and this is all part of his grander candy scheme. If I were you, I'd be looking for golden tickets.
(The Candy Man can, cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good.)

For the last ten years or more I can remember random times Downtown Jersey City would have this smell so it has been around for a long time. I remember always thinking it came from a factory or warehouse. I wonder what it really is.
I also find it funny NY automatically blames Jersey for the smell.

I think that I'll blame it on NYC - this might be the systemwide exhaust discharge from "the clean subway" vents.
