Thank you everyone for all the advice! I denied providing my bank account number and credit card and walked away from the lease. I submitted a rental application with my ssn, employment verification, credit history and references. The landlord called my current rental office and checked references...everything fair until then but there has to be a limit to what the landlord can ask for.
Thanks again everyone! Really appreciate all the advice and support!
luckily found another condo just a few blocks from the one that i previously intended to rent. i am very glad things worked out well. i had already given a notice to my current landlord and was about to move out in just a few days. the new landlord didn't ask for the my bank account & credit card number until earlier this week - about 2 weeks after i originally sent her my filled in application and credit report. had i not found this new place, i would have been in a tight spot. a few stressful days but at the end it worked out well.

Kind of silly for the landlord to do, in my opinion. The rental market is pretty soft right now.
Dave, did you ask WHY the landlord wanted this information?
yes i asked and he said "just because it is on the application form it is required. without that information the lease application is incomplete and can not be considered".

Was this a landlord like a management company deal, or an independent landlord?
I would have asked for more information than it's "required".
Seriously, that's some Arnold Diaz "Shame On You" stuff there.
it was an independent landlord. honestly, he had no idea why it was required either but only because it was on the form, he needed it. maybe his attorney had adviced to have all information in full.
Since everyone asked... the guy I was renting from didnt do credit checks. He just wanted to make sure he wasnt renting to a dead beat. SO he asked for a couple statements. I guess He could have asked for a couple pay stubs and gotten the same type of info. I was 19, what did I care... lol
Just curious, why would you need to give a bank statement?? Obviously, I don't rent and am not a landlord, but when we did rent, we were NEVER asked for these things, just security and a signature on a lease.
Can be used as proof of income and or assets. Just like with mortgages today, landlords are trying to secure and protect themselves as well.
Im trying to rent a house and they are asking for 2 months of bank statements can they do that? If so it sucks because like its a violation of my privacy especially if I have provided ssn, done a background check, credit check, provided references and pay stubs
