Default Rental agreement

My new landlord is asking me to provide my credit card number and bank account number on the lease application. I have rented for a few years but no one has ever asked me to put down my bank account number or credit card number on paper. I have already provided my ssn, credit report and employment proof.

Is it normal for landlords to ask for bank account numbers?

If you are truly worried about provided him with that info, give him the number of your credit card and bank acct. then cancel those and open new ones : )))))

I would say no. Ive had 5-6 apartments over the years and no-one has ever asked me for MY bank info. I did have to provide a bank statement for one but I blanked out the account number info.

I always tell my clients not to fill that part in, although it is on our rental application.

Just curious, why would you need to give a bank statement?? Obviously, I don't rent and am not a landlord, but when we did rent, we were NEVER asked for these things, just security and a signature on a lease.

It's a bit silly for the landlord to ask for a bank acct number... it's on the check you give him every month. Credit card number... I would not give it out because once you do, they can charge whatever they want to the card and the credit card company will do nothing about it!

Agreed, they will get your account number, but any idea why the statement request??
I would never give them my credit card number. Just wouldn't happen.

Thank you everyone for all the advice! I denied providing my bank account number and credit card and walked away from the lease. I submitted a rental application with my ssn, employment verification, credit history and references. The landlord called my current rental office and checked references...everything fair until then but there has to be a limit to what the landlord can ask for.

Thanks again everyone! Really appreciate all the advice and support!
