We're looking for a family-friendly Princeton-area town with strong schools and a nice community with people who are open to making friends with others who are new to their area. Nothing too rural or far from expressways, so we can get around & explore. Thanks for any suggestions and help!

you've got some good choices - west windsor/plainsboro, montgomery township, princeton - all great schools. it's a pricey area though, what's your range?

Not sure of price range -- some will depend upon what we can sell the Chicago house for. Looking for something WITHOUT a pool (seems like a lot of listings have them) -- any idea why? We have a community pool here & use it all the time. Are there such things in that area or maybe is that why so many of these homes have pools on-site?

unless you live in a townhouse or condo development or retirement community, "planned communities" with pool, clubhouse are rare in NJ. I'm not aware of any in the princeton area, but I'm hardly the expert. that's why you'll see a lot of home with pools (plus, it's an affluent area so ppl can afford them).

again, without knowing your price range, it's hard to say what you can get for your $$$. these towns are not cheap, i'm guessing a 3brm ranch for mid 300's to start? figure taxes in the $7 - 8K range for a property like that. again, this is very broad. the upside are schools are among best in state.

Tahiti has given you a good list. I don't think Princeton has a community pool but there is a pool at their YMCA.

West Windsor has a community park with 3 pools, a skate park, dog park, football, baseball and soccer fields-

Township of West Windsor

You might consider Cranbury. They send their kids to Princeton HS and they have a community pool as well.

Cranbury Swim Club, Cranbury NJ, a safe and fun place to swim for nearly forty years

Besides Cranbury, West Windsor, Princeton, and Plainsboro, I would also recommend South Brunswick (specifically Monmouth Junction and/or Dayton) and Monroe.

I'm currently living in NY but am considering a move to Princeton or nearby neighborhoods. In terms of schools, do those parts of NJ offer something similar to NY state's BOCES program where high school students can simultaneously take serious vocational training courses like heavy machinery maintenance and construction? Is this program, if there is one, available to both public and private school students?

You might want to investigate the options in both Mercer and Middlesex Counties since the towns around Princeton are in both counties. Good luck.

Take a look at Robbinsville. It's an up and coming neighborhood so not as expensive as Princeton or West Windsor, but still great schools and communities. It's a good time to buy in Robbinsville as well with the newer homes ranging from $400-600k (Washington Town Center) to the larger homes ranging from $600-$900k (Combs Farm / Cubberly Meadows Estates).
