I'm confused too, I see the service that prompted the story is in Roselle, but beyond that, I'm not sure I understand. One woman moved "up north" and couldn't get a job, but it doesn't say where.

The story reads - her uncle, an African American, was killed because he fell on some white woman's shoes. Thing is...it's "history" and though we should never forget, I truly believe we have evolved into decent human beings since.
And nobody here had come further than Ms. White, whose uncle was walking to the general store with his head down one day when he bumped into a white couple he hadn’t seen. “He said he jumped up and he fell and his hand touched the lady’s shoe,†Ms. White said, and the man then told him: “‘You’re out of your place, we’ll get you for this,’ and that’s what they killed him for.â€

But that was in "rural South Carolina". Listen, I'm not denying some ugly things went on here, I'm just confused as to the title of the OP.
People who have gone through the terrible experiences in the South have also gone through some terrible experiences in NJ. We are always told that these experiences are so remote, in history, and that nobody alive now should be talking/thinking about it. This article illustrates that this is wrong.

I was never told that? If anything...it was just the opposite.

I don't think no one is denying that things have happened in the past not only in the south but anywhere in America. But we must agree & understand that great progress has been made since the days when a black man couldn't even look at a white woman, tomorrow our great country will swear in Barack Obama as our new president. The issue is not about talking/thinking about it, it's about Moving forward and leaving racism and bigotry behind. at least that's how I view it.
