and plus Pfizer has to "Buy" wyeth and that costs money
well, i haven't read how they are structring the finance side of this deal but if it is in stock, they will buy it out without 'actually' spending money.
most mergers work because of the economy of scale factor and joint R&D (i.e. 1+1 > 2 after the merger). both get access to each others niche market, logistics, knowledge... which if used effectively can be tremendously helpful.

yeah, more than 50,000 lay-offs across the industries announced in a single day! and the stock market still went up for most part of the day - just unbelieveable!

this is bad!!! I am worried, how are people going to make it?? I mean this is really bad. I wish the layoffs would stop. It hurts us all. How are we going to recover for all this trouble?? What are these people going to do?

it says more than 200k layoffs have been announced in 2009. if that is the official number i wonder how big the unofficial number is!! my company let go about 100+ people last week; so did my wife's employer. such small layoffs (+/- 100 at a time) are not reported at all in media. if we add these up, i bet the total layoff stats would more than double.

thanks for the article, I see no end to this downward spiral. The party is over for alot of people. All the suffering and worrying these people must feel. I wish I could change it.

My wife is a high level accountant for Pfizer and the one thing they have right now is huge cash reserves. This may change after their lipitor patent runs out so strategically, since their R&D is not very fruitful at the moment, they have to acquire other companies. With their cash reserves they can.
From CNN:
"The deal values Wyeth shares at $50.19 each, a nearly 15% premium to Friday's closing price. Pfizer agreed to pay $33 in cash and 0.985 share in Pfizer stock for each Wyeth share."
Anyways, my wife works for Pfizer and my best friend's wife works for Wyeth. Hopefully they both keep their jobs.
Also, my wife says the biggest reason this deal works is that a lot of jobs between the two companies are redundant and that as bad as the previous pfizers mergers were, this merger will prob be way worse.
My husband and I used to work at Wyeth - I wonder how this will affect our 401ks?
I remember the American Cyanamid merger - survived that one.
