You guys are lucky. Down here in MD we don't have any decent pizza parlors. The best pizza I've had outside of NJ was in Richmond, Va.

WELLLL..................
This past summer we were on OBX and went to a local pizza joint one night. OMG, this stuff was INEDIBLE. Truly, truly horrible. I can't even tell you why, I've blocked the memory it was so bad. There were 12 of us in the place (that sat maybe 15) and we all (even the kids) were giving each other "WTF is this crap" eye..LOL.
So, now I know. There is no place in Northern, Central or Southern NJ that evens comes close to that nastiness.

Here is my rule of thumb for Pizza in NJ. The more expensive it is, the more like crap it will taste.
Hoboken...
Nice Italian town. Good pizza joints? 0 We have Grimaldi's (way over priced), Benny Tudino's (how this is considered pizza is beyond me), and every other place that charges 3 dollars for a slice be damned to hell.
The Boken might be the only place in all of North Jersey that has terrible pizza. If I can't make it up to the Heights or Belleville, I order from Domino's. The pie is that bad here.

Pizza?
There's no question, Conte's in Princeton. Amazing thin crust pie, great area to walk around in too!

dude, sorry, not to call you a liar , but i maintain what I said - that garbage I had in OBX could NOT be found in Hoboken. the WORST OF THE WORST in this state is 1000xs better than what I had there.
i don't know grimaldi's or benny tudino's (are they "designer pizza" places?), but i have had pizza in the boken (some hole in the wall on washington ave, but this was a zillion yrs ago) and again, NOWHERE near that poison.

A good rule of thumb is take a peak in the back and see who's actually making the pies. The places where I go are middle aged or older Italian guys. Not some kid who doesn't look old enough to shave.

I always liked Benny Tudino's and Grimaldi's. They aren't the greatest, but as you've said, they are way better than anything else south of Philly and North of Boston.

I hear you. Believe me, I do. Benny's has been around since the 60s or so, and Grimaldi's has been here for a while as well.
With rent increases come the higher prices. And it seems most of all the good pizza joints have folded up and made room for the garbage. That is why I still drive out to Belleville for my pizza. Worth the 13 mile trip.
I lived in Greenville, SC for five years, and wow, talk about a culinary wasteland with regards to pizza, but the BBQ cannot be beat!
