^The 159 leaves NYC and runs to Fort Lee once per hour from 2am-6am.

i want to defend hoboken also... i lived there for 8 years. not everybody is 22 to 25 and immature. just don't live right on washington street and you'll be fine. also, uptown is a little less crazy. it's definitely worth checking out... however $1400 a month may be a problem. You might be able to get a studio for that much, but you're also going to have to struggle with parking. good luck!

you may want to check out weehawken too for better prices than hoboken.

You could afford a 1 bedroom for that much in Hoboken. Like others said its more of a post grad town.

Check out the section of Weehawken atop the cliff along Boulevard East and Gregory Avenue. It borders Hoboken and Union City and is connected with midtown Manhattan by a road tunnel.

The commute from Weehawken to Englewood Cliffs will be 10 to 20 minutes quicker than from Hoboken and Jersey City. The commute to midtown Manhattan is also quicker, but the commute from Weehawken to downtown Manhattan (a smaller business district than midtown) takes longer.

Buses connecting midtown Manhattan and Weehawken run 24 hours per day. During rush hour, they run every minute to 5 minutes. There is never a long wait. You'll have to stand often, but the ride only takes from 7 to 15 minutes.

The feel is similar to Union City, but Weehawken has more middle class and rich people with a population that is around 30% Hispanic. In Weehawken, unlike Union City, most of the 2- and 3-family homes are owner-occupied which contributes to Weehawken's better neighborhood feel. And Weehawken has large upper-middle-class population, which Union City doesn't.

Weehawken doesn't have a reputation as "hip, cosmopolitan, artsy." But this describes a lot of people who live in the town. Weehawken exists off the radar, probably because it is a small town (2 blocks across) with a small population compared to surrounding cities. A decent concentration of restaurants and bars is located along Park Avenue, and a few other places are scattered around.

Plenty of one bedroom apartments exist in your price range. Here are 2 examples recently listed on craigslist. Other places are advertised with nothing more than a sign in front of the house so you need to walk thru the neighborhoods to find them.
