100% cellulose... (not asbestos) :)
I just wanted to let everyone know my good experience with a NJ based asbestos testing company. I sent out a sample on Friday and 1 week later received a fax stating we have 100% cellulose ceiling tiles. Cost was $65 - a little high, but they seemed to be well accredited and were not going to require me to wait 1 week to receive their "testing kit" (i.e. a ziplock bag). The tiles are 1950s vintage, and 1'x1' in shape. If you do a google search for this, you will find yourself horrified that you MUST!!! have asbestos tiles. There is one website that has a very good google search placement, scaring everyone. While I do not regret the testing (obviously it is great peace of mind), I am not sure that I would assume its asbestos. I did not really think it was asbestos until I started googling. Anyway... off to go tear down my ceiling

The asbestos tiles are typically 8"x8". If you do have them, I do not recommend dismantling them yourself! Asbestos is only dangerous when it's broken appart - the particles are what is hazardous... hook shaped fibers that stick inside you lungs! An abatement contractor will typically soak everything down with water before dismantling them...plus they wear protective clothing and appropriate masks. This is not a DIY project to take on..hire a professional
