My husband and I are currently living in Hoboken and love it, but way too expensive for us. We're older and my husband is a patient at Mt Sinai.
We need to settle and every place we look at that's affordable also has a huge commute to get to the upper east side where the hospital is. We just moved up from Florida for his care and, trust me, selling in Florida is a miracle and left us financially shaky. A real estate agent has suggested Union City, Weehawken. I found a lovely community (Society HIll) in JC, but the commute is daunting. Can anyone make suggestions, give feedback, etc. for our situation. (I'll also be looking for work).

Commuting to the Upper East Side from anywhere in NJ is going to stink, as a general matter. Do you need to commute every day, or during peak hours? I imagine driving into the city might be a possibility if you don't have to do it every day, and if you don't have to do in during rush hours.

If you need or are more comfortable with mass transit, I would suggest looking into suburban NY (Westchester) or Connecticut, because then your train would leave you off at Grand Central Station on the East Side, where it would be an easy subway ride uptown. NJ trains (and those from Long Island) leave you off on the west side of Manhattan, and getting cross town is not much fun.

I'd seriously consider renting wherever you end up -- at least for now. Most of NYC-metro area is expected to see 25% price decreases in 2009.

Good luck.
