Hillside, NJ
Hey, anyone know how hillside is doing these days? I haven't been there in awhile, mainly the area around Union Ave (Irvington).

Depends how you look at it, some people will stay its OK and not that bad but i would say its horrible. Depending on opinion best way is to go there and take a look at yourself.

there's worse places in NJ than Hillside right now. North Jersey isn't even that bad. i think cities in South Jersey are way worse. but yeah, just don't let your guard down when you visit there, and you'll be fine. Hillside has seen better days, so you might be slightly dissapointed. but hopefully not to dissapointed

Cities in South Jersey worse? South Jersey's got Camden, North Jersey has Irvington. I don't think cities in South Jersey are any worse than those in North Jersey. North jersey definatley has more though.

yes we do, but have you seen parts of Camden and trenton? there horrible. trenton not as much, but camden is terrible. Irvington wasn't always bad, i think its only gotten bad in recent years. most places in East Orange, Newark, Paterson, Jersey City are fine. i can walk around parts of Newark and Paterson and feel totally safe.

Hey guys, don't turn this into a "whose tougher" thread. I just wanted to know about Hillside ONLY. I know North and South Jersey both have rough areas, however I'm concerned with Hillside (as I'm thinking about moving back there).
Anybody know how Young Ave is (btw Wolf Place & Sager Place)?

I lived there when I was really young too. My next door neighbor was Phil Rizzuto but I was too young to know who he was. My Mom went remembers him from class in Hillside High School. She always said he was not very well liked by other kids. I lived on Salem Ave.
Every few years I go back to visit and we take a drive around the old neighborhood. Mom just gets sick thinking how down hill it has deteriorated. I seem to remember playing in Elizabeth River Park. I wonder what that looks like. One probably needs an elephant rifle for protection to walk down that area today.

A couple of family members that live in Newark told me it has went down the drain. But I just can't imagine that, honestly. It was such a good place. Never was perfect but it was a good area that was within great distance to Newark and New York.
