Question Alloway, New Jersey

I was hoping to find who or what originated the name Alloway?

If any one has any information I would greatly appreciate.

Thank you,

Are you sure you're not thinking of Galloway Twp.? It's south Jersey...I never heard of an Alloway here though.

Default Alloway origin

I realize this is an old thread... but an unanswered one at that... so I thought I would clear some things up.

Alloway is a rural township in Salem County.

The area was originally referred to as "Thompon's Bridge." It was then later renamed in honor for Chief Alloway of one of the local Lenape tribes. It was known as "Allowaystown" or just "Alloways," then later as "Upper Alloways Creek," finally just being known as Alloway Twp. after being incorporated as a township.

Hope that helps! If anyone has any of questions on the history of Salem County or any of its boroughs or townships, please feel free to ask!
