I live in Union City between 24th and Bergenline and I am a white girl and never had any problems living there. I've been living in this town for over a year now and people are very down to earth. I went to Hoboken once or twice and a lot of my old high school friends make a big deal out of this town and I dont know why really. The people have their noses stuck in the air and are living in their own little world. I rather live in my what people consider "ghetto" area (which is not), than be with people who always need to be impressed by what you drive, own, and wear. Union City is a great little town and has its problems like every other town. It is a very heavily populated hispanic area and I don't know if that bothers you, my husband is Dominican so obviously I don't have a problem with that. To each their own though. I think the people here are nice, a little crazy, but nice.

To the original poster - I feel compelled to respond b/c I went through a similar situation. I was raised in NNJ - in a really nice suburb...then when I started college I thought it would be so cool to move to Weehawken. I thought the diversity & the urban 'city' feel would be so great. Unfortunately it was a horrible mistake. There is absolutely nothing glamourous about living in union city. (I lived across palisade ave. so one side was weehawken & across the st. was union city). If I were you I would rent 1st before you buy a property there. You will most definitely be a minority. It is mostly poor, immigrants & their families that live there. That is the majority. I do not think that crime is a major problem there, the major issue is the poverty. You will see piles of day laborers sitting on bergenline during the day, many of them drunk...it's horrible. Also, the traffic & the congestion there are horrendous. Try to get from point A to point B on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon & you will be sorry you live there. The parking situation is just as bad. I'm sure your "house" doesn't have a driveway. You will spend hours looking for a parking space at night, only to have to get up & move the car by 6 am or you'll have a $30 ticket. You can do whatever you want, but I would sincerely rent there before I buy. Or just listen to the other posters & look in better communities with better ammenities. It may cost more but your quality of life is worth it. Unfortunately in Union City, there is no quality of life.

You don't need a car in union city. That's sort of the point of living in an urban environment and getting out of the suburbs. If you want to drive everywhere, then, YES, you should not live in union city.

My family moved to Union City from Hoboken a little over a year ago. We are white with a toddler. I actually find the traffic and congestion here to be less than Hoboken. We like the easy access to Hoboken and the city as well as our neighbors whom have generally been great. If you're looking for an urban, convenient neighborhood you'll like Union City. If, however, you're looking for surburbia you'll be disappointed. Hope this helps.

If you like urban you'll like Union City?
What kind of a comment is that ?
Just more generalization.

Cars in very dense urban areas are not wise.

Simply put, I wouldn't move to Haiti if I didn't speak French.
I diagree and I'm Cuban and have been in North Bergen for 31 years. I don't know any Anglos that feel that way.

It IS interesting that the area is 82% hispanic (whether white hispanic, black hispanic, or brown)...I've never seen a town that is so dominated by hispanic culture....

Union City, New Jersey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The racial makeup of the city was 58.38% White, 3.64% African American, 0.70% Native American, 2.15% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 28.19% from other races, and 6.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 82.32% of the population.

I don't have a problem with Union City other than the parking. I'm Black and I don't feel out of place there. If it wasn't for the parking situation I would move there. But, I do understand that some people may feel out of place. That depends on the person though. I had friends from many different ethnic backgrounds growing up, and I've lived in places where I wondered to myself if I was the only minority. I'm cool with it though because I like diversity. A ex girlfriend and I stayed at a friends house in UC for a month to watch the place while he was away. She hated it. If she wasn't with me she wouldn't leave the house. She prefered to be around anglos. But that was her though. So yeah, if you're not Hispanic, you may feel out of place, but I don't think that can be said for all people.
