Im white myself and just bought my own place here. It's close to the city and affordable. Parking SUCKS bigtime, but I'll have my own driveway.
There are a lot of factors to consider as to how comfortable you will be here. Without a doubt there are a ton of hispanics, but on my block I have a very friendly white couple next to me, an older Italian guy, a spanish couple, and an african american guy. I also noticed a good amount of white people, probably venturing back from Hoboken in the area.
All my male friends are alright, but I find females asking me if its ok for them to walk to their car alone at night, and others that straight up refuse to be in the area.

Just more generalization.
Cars in very dense urban areas are not wise.

Urban is an adjective meaning characteristic of city life (i.e. dense population)...not rural, suburban.

I have lived in Union City for sometimes, and I liked its affordability and relative tranquility compare to other urban areas. However, I read an article in the local paper that there was an incident involving gang members who were trying to force their way into the local police station trying to free their boy. That reminded me of the Wild Wild West of Dodge City! Is it for real? The fact that these hoodlums dared bewilders me. I am slightly worried of this situation. If these chaps are so imboldened as to go the the precinit to challenge the authorities what else must be brewing in the Hudson County? I understand the Senator is from this neck of the wood and will do something before it turns hotter in the coming Summer months.

I mostly post in response to these threads about north hudson, because there is a lot of misinformation spewed about the area. I disagree with those that claim it is dangerous. I also disagree with those that claim someone who is not hispanic should not (could not?) live there. Yes, I would agree that Spanish is the primary language spoken in the area, but I did grow up there and I did not speak much spanish until I learned it in a classroom in high school.
I would most likely not raise my children there, unless I sent them away to boarding school. But, for a young professional sans children who works in nyc?? North Hudson is a great option, as is Hoboken, as is downtown JC, JSQ, and some neighborhoods in the outer boroughs.

I here ya dude. Good for you, you're right, Hudson County in general gets a bad rap throughout the state for some reason. All I was trying to say is, especially in these rough times where homeowners are forced to either sell their homes or are being foreclosed, that if they have to suddenly rent, and I'm talking about white families with children, do you think that North Hudson County is the place to be. Imagine your young children going to a 87% hispanic school system?? Not being racial, just trying to be realistic with the best info I can offer. As you mentioned, single cool, but family w/kids, I not so sure.

I'm Cuban too, and North Bergen was always more Anglo than say WNY or UC. I had a few Anglo friends in WNY and they only felt comfortable with the Americanized (if I may) Cubans. Otherwise, everyone else was a ****. Trust me, I've had my share of arguements because they claim that I'm not considerd a ****, but yet my parents don't speak a word of English. Are they ****'s?????????????????

My latest Union City experience:
Driving south on JFK at ~17th in Union City, I stopped at a traffic light and watched a man walking with his wife place his 1/4 full plastic soda bottle on the utility cabinet as he kept on walking. I rolled down my window and shouted "that isn't a garbage can!". Blank stares.
I'm an old man on the inside.

98% percent of incidents in North Hudson never make the paper...News of most serious crimes spreads by word of mouth around here...the jersey journal is a crappy newspaper, their police blotter consists of a few things out of jersey city, the occasional shoplifter or fare evader in bayonne, and never anything from North Hudson, they also love to spotlight restaurants or clubs in downtown jersey city and hoboken....as if nothing of note ever happens in the rest of Hudson County, good or bad

Well, most people are more comfortable with others like them. That is why you have a Chinatown, Little Italy, Korea Town, etc. AS it stands UC is mostly Hispanic. Most white english speaking people are not going to be comfortable surrounded by those of a differetn race who also speak another language.
Like many comedians have said, when white people hear hispanics talking in spanish, "Are they talking about me?" YES! Of course that is a joke.
I am white and speak enough spanish to find a bathroom and a restaurant. Didn't stop me from buying in UC. Even if UC is "ghetto", which I do not think all of it is, many of the hot areas were just that until (duhn duhn duhn) gentrification.
I look forward to moving to UC. I also look forward to openign a business there.

A restaurant or a bar with decent beer selection please! I'll go. I already make a point of patronizing the few good Weehawken/UC/WNY establishments.
