I was raised in Chatham Twp. and was constantly frustrated by how hard it was to get around without a car. Say you wanted to take the train to get into NYC and nobody was around to drive you to the train station in Chatham Boro--you couldn't take a cab, you had to order it like a week in advance--your only option was to walk 7 miles. Or hitchhike. Which was another thing we did to amuse ourselves. Besides drinking and taking drugs in the woods. Fun times! Ahh, and then when we did finally get our licenses all the accidents and drunk driving--OMG I can't even think about it now without getting sick to my stomach!
Because of my childhood experiences we chose to live somewhere where our children can walk around and go to the movies, bookstore, or pizza place, or visit all their friends, or hop on a bus to go into the city, or whatever. Now I'm not stupid enough to think there won't be drinking or drugs, but at least it will be easier for them to independently choose to do other things as well.

talk if you will, about how Morris County is overrated. I currently live here and I despise it and look forward to escaping it when I go off to college. People say I'm crazy for wanting to leave this county for several reasons. One reason is because it is cheaper to live out here than somewhere closer to New York like Bergen or Essex Counties. Another reason is that Morris County is home to some really nice communities (Mountain Lakes, Mendham, Chatham) that are safe and are quite affluent (they make money sound like its everything).
the main reasons why I dislike Morris County are:
1) Isolation- Towns are incredibly isolated. You have to travel miles down the road just to get to a store in the next town. Whereas in other counties some towns are so close to each other that you can walk there on foot. Now that's convenience! Going to the mall is a whole waste of a Saturday. You got the Rockaway Mall that's all the way out in the boonies. The only other malls are like the Ledgewood Mall, never been though, but I don't hear about it much so it's probably terrible.
2) People- People from Morris County are very strange. It's also a very large county so there's a diverse range of people. You have many affluent people in Mendham, Chester, Mountain Lakes, and Chatham. And then you have some very trashy people in towns I won't name because I don't want to offend anyone, but some of these places are inbelievably trashy, and pretty much anywhere west of I-287 are a bunch of hicks.
3) Transportation- The roads here suck. I-80 is probably my least favorite road to drive on, and 287 is just a mess north of Morristown. And the highway systems are the only ways to get to other towns, because they are so spread out. The back roads just take way too long.
Unfortunately, I have run out of space, so i will continue this argument later on after more people post. Please post if you agree with me or disagree. This could be a pretty interesting thread is people post valid points and make valid arguments against me. I'm just voicing my opinion, and I am just as interested to hear yours whether you agree with my perspective or not. Thanks.

well if I look at your post objectively you do have a point on two out of three depending on what area in Morris you live in:
1. This is totally true, however if there was a 7-11 on every corner or some convience store it would take away from the character. However Morris is really some areas not walkable to get to things so I do agree. I lived in Hillsdale Bergen and really most all the towns in that area were very walkable. So I agree in some areas.
2. This is an interesting one, I am west of 287 and I find a great mix in Jefferson Township. MY house is a small little palace and I am not a hick, but if I go down the road there are smaller log cabins that could use a face lift and some damn hicks in them. Now if I go into Milton in Jefferson I find really nice homes and no hicks all professionals. So its mixed. However I look at it this way, the hicks keep the damn taxes low. If I lived with all top notch houses and top notch professionals I may as well have stayed in Bergen. So hicks KEEP THE TAXES LOW!!!! MY taxes which I just paid yesterday, I am jumping for joy. I also find in Bergen or the other counties you mentioned you will get all others that may not be as desirable as the hicks. I am not going to mention lets just say the LIBERALS who want more police more strip mall more taxes. So its a trade.
3. Bergen and the other counties you mentioned are so much more crowded that if you think traffic is bad here, you are mistaken on this point. Just by sheer population of these counties your in more damn traffic than here.
I find Morris COunty what Bergen County used to be 25 years ago or more.

I grew up in Newark...seen, heard and been through some pretty sad, crude times there. My parents got an apartment in Nutley to get us out of there and have us go to a safer better school. I thought Nutley was practically the country...at 13 what did I know. I just got married last year and my husband and I look in Morris/Warren county all the time. I would feel blessed to move into one of these counties. I could always come back if I needed more action. From what I see alot of these areas have enough action for me. I'm a big girl, I can drive. As far as children...children don't know...home is home, they will make do anywhere they live and they will generally be happy anywhere. Memories of home no matter where you live will always be nice. Even with all the things that happened growing up in Newark I can still think of happy memories - the vieiw form my window and the hot summer night sounds of the city playing in the streets. As long as I have a nice cozy roof over my head, nice neighbors, safety etc. I couldn't complain. Whether you have the hustle and bustle memories or country relaxed memories...there all good memories. Feel blessed to have what you have and live where you live.

I agree.. sew me.
But everywhere you go ESPECIALLY urban cities, you will find strange people.
But,
You're like me... I would take urban living over rural living any day, but doing this thread wasn't a good idea... Do you know how many people are from Morris County and lovin it on here? It's just a matter of preference really, It's just best not to express it in this kind of way.

1. Both Mendham and Chester are kinda isolated, but Mountain Lakes is next to 46 and Chatham is in a densely populated area close to Essex already I believe. Mountain lakes especially is a very nice town, with historical homes clustered close together. Chatham is over-priced, with tiny homes, and not as good looking from what I could see when we went there for a party.
2. ML, Chester, and Mendham are all west of 287. They trashy?
3. Trashy in what way?

1. Well, Morris county is huge in terms of square miles. Different parts of the county have a different feel. Chatham is close to 24 and 78, it almost feels like your in Essex or Union county. in fact, before I moved to Morris, I thought it was in one of those counties.
2. Yeah I was thinking about Mountain lakes and Mendham. They are both west of 287 and they are certainly not trashy. Chester is kinda pushing it. it's not really trashy, its just kinda... rural. trashy is like more if you go towards Roxbury .
3. Trashy is trashy, everyone has there own opinions of what trash is. You fill in your own definition of what you want it to be.

As for malls, you do have Rockaway and Ledgewood, but you also have Short Hills- probably one of the most upscale malls in the country. I dunno though, to me there is more to life than malls.
You do realize that 3 out of the 4 "affluent" areas you listed are west of 287 right? (Mountain Lakes, Mendham, Chester)
I-80 in Morris is a revelation compared to the same road that goes through Paterson. Tough to argue with you here though, although go see what Rt. 46 is like in Essex and Rt. 46 in Morris is like a totally different road.
So are you looking to move out of state or out of Morris County? In case you didnt notice, I disagree with you. I really enjoy living in Morris County and it is one of the few places where in the span of a county you could do from a quaint downtown with easy access to NYC (Madison, Chatham) to the lush rolling hills and farmland out by Chester. We have no tax burden that we have to fund (look to Essex), schools are great, lots of parks, it really has it all.

actually, the Morristown/Madison/Florham Park area is one of the few areas that I actually like in morris. it's pretty decent over there. my argument about isolation I guess applies more to like Rockaway, Jefferson, and other areas similar to that because man it is deserted out there.

your opinions ARE like a 17 year old's, which you are. they are classic of someone who, by mere age, has not had the experience or wisdom to know any better. calling people in a town that has an income of over $100K trashy merely proves the point.
as the saying goes: "I'm not young enough to know everything". Come back when you're 30, and you'll see what we mean.
