I would definitely consider Metuchen. It has a nice walkable downtown with good restaurants and coffee places but not bars per say. Some restaurants have liquor licenses and others are bring your own bottle. There is also a huge YMCA w/ a good pool and fitness center. You would be close to Menlo Park Mall for your wife to shop. It's also an easy commute to NYC on the NE corridor.

Right. What I meant, though, was that anywhere someone would want to walk is downtown and easton ave. If the op lives pretty close to either, he's in a heavily policed zone where he doesn't need to worry about safety. If he decides to live somewhere a bit farther off, then, yes, he should probably take taxis home to avoid any chance of trouble.

Default Apartment in New Brunswick

I moved to New Brunswick because I work in Manhattan and by fiance worked in Princeton. We live downtown and love it. There is plenty to do and our apartment is a 2 minute walk to the train station that goes to both NY and Princeton. We are in our 20's and go out most nights. There's ton's of fun places downtown. If you are still looking for an apartment in New Brunswick, let me know. We have to move to NY soon because my fiance just got a job in Brooklyn so we both work in the city now.
