Old Bridge used to be Madison Township - which got mixed up with Madison, NJ... which is why they changed the name of the town.
Isn't there two Washingtons, and two Monroe's in the state as well?

there's actually about 4 or 5 washingtons in the state. there's one in Bergen county. there's one in Warren county. there's one near me in morris, but most people just say they're from Long Valley, Long Valley is an unincorporated community in Washington township. there's a washington somewhere in south jersey too, it's either in Cumberland or Salem counties, not sure which one though. there's actually quite a few names that are used twice in New jersey, the only example i can think off the top of my head is Fairfield. The Fairfield that I know is up here in Essex county, I actually really like that town. The second Fairfield is somewhere down in South Jersey, I wanna say Burlington county but I'm not sure.

i suggest a total name change. is there even a wooded ridge where Wood-Ridge is located? but then again, is there a wooden bridge down in Woodbridge. and name changes are always confusing. i don't like the name change of West Paterson. Woodland Park is just too common, West Paterson is something specific to Jersey. and as for East Paterson, Elmwood Park has become a widely accepted and noted town within North jersey.

There's a Washington Twp in Burlington County and another in Gloucester. There's a Fairton down here, but I don't know about a Fairfield; there might be.

Not strange, weird, but I recall Bricktown, which changed it's name to Brick, NJ, for reason's I do not recall.
I know, not NJ, but PA, a town called Scotrun, my son and DH thought it was named, Scrotu... (mmmm...) fill in the consonant.
