Exclamation Two Questions for people who actually Live in Perth Amboy

Okay I have searched and searched the New Jersey forum for info on Perth Amboy and all I have been able to come up with is conflicting opinions about the place. I'm hoping someone can give me an honest, up to date, and unbiased answer to one or both of my questions.

1. Has Perth Amboy really changed for the better in the last two years, in terms of safety mainly or is it still kind of a dump?

2. What are the best apt. communities to rent from? I heard Harbortown was nice but that it isn't anymore.

Also I am a 24 year old single female with no kids, I'm going to be moving with my roommate/best friend who is also single and without kids so whether or not it's a good family place doesn't apply. All we really want out of this town is a relatively safe place to sleep at night and/or recuperate from whatever we get into in N.Y.C.

I hope someone can help thanx

Check out cliffside park. Certainly safe and certainly close enough to the city for what you are asking for. The rent is a bit higher, but not substantially. the reason I suggested cliffside, is no one will come on and suggest it is unsafe, at all.

Default Go west, but just a bit

Drive west on New Brunswick ave out of Perth Amboy to the Fords section of Woodbridge township....all your needs and more will be met.

Um I think the original poster asked about Perth Amboy, not other towns... maybe someone can actually answer her original question here.

Harbortown can easily be split into two sections, the part near the water and the more "inland" part. Near the water is "the rich part" of Harbortown. And they are still building more condos. Then there's the other more inland part which is a mix of Section 8 and middle class families. I wouldn't live in this part if I could afford to live in the better part of town. Just not a "quiet" area at times.

Harbortown is a very diverse part of town considering that Perth Amboy is predominately Hispanic.

I would also recommend the waterfront section east of Kearny Avenue. Beautiful large Victorians, some apartments, and nice views. Probably the best part of town.

Yes, Perth Amboy has improved DRAMATICALLY in the last 10 years. One of the few cities in NJ that has. The rents around the waterfront have increased exponentially. Hence, the reason it is even being mentioned in the same discussion with towns like Cliffside Park.

Here's the caveat: The town is realistically about 95% Hispanic. If you are not Hispanic, and don't feel comfortable being a decided minority in the town you live, then Perth Amboy may not be for you. If you are Hispanic or being the minority doesn't bother you, then absolutely consider Perth Amboy.

I have to respond to this because I am a single mother of two who works for a Luxury Car Dealership and I live in Harbortown. There are 3 different parts to Harbortown: Harbortown Sail(owners) Harbortown Terrace(renterslder apts/duplexes/townhomes) and Harbortown Ports(renters:newer apts/duplexes/townhomes). Me I grew up in nice private Home on a corner lot in Edison(borderline Metuchen) I've rented in Edison and Piscataway and now finally in Perth Amboy. I was skeptic about living in Perth Amboy like anyone else. Fortunately for me I work with ppl who live in both Harbortown & in town. When I surveyed them I got 50/50 some said its a horrible place to live the other half said its great. So I did what I always do when looking at a place to reside I went there during day and night times during the week and weekends. I wouldnt live in the Terrace they're older units and the Super said it was a little hood over there. The rental prices & layouts differ btwn the Terrace and the Ports but any style TownHouse in the Ports are available in the Sail to own. Most of the Supers live in the Ports where I live. I had a 2br flat style apt on Armstrong Lane for my 1st yr which seems to be designed for a handicapped person everything is spacious & wide. But being a mother of two there wasnt enough storage/closet space so I moved. Plus I hated the carport bc some1 stole all the change out of my car w/o breaking the window or setting off my alarm. Along w/ that all the carport spaces aren't covered (I had an uncovered one sucks during RAIN & SNOW). So I moved into 2br 2.5ba TownHome w/2car garage which is almost identical(besides the details of accessories) to HB Sail. I actually asked about any *SPECIALS* and there was Im renting my TH for less than what my old 2br flat was renting for for the 1st yr. So I live on Harbortown Blvd its nice & quiet I hardly ever see or hear my neighbors(I didnt even have that when I lived in Piscataway and Edison apts those are NICE NEIGHBORHOODS!). I have my 2 car garage one side I use for storage & it has a storage closet in there. I have 2 floors BRS on 2nd floor my kids have their own prvt bathroom in their room and I have my own bathroom in my br. I have the extened patio a huge linen closet a half a bath on 1stfloor w/ a big living room & dining room & EIC & vertical blinds came w/ the unit. As far as Perth Amboy the ppl do **** me off often & my kids are 1/2 hispanic but its the attitude they have. They have a tendency to treat you like you dont belong & very few speak English even thou they can. But my kids go to school there and the schools are great and have better programs than Edison or Piscataway. So for me YES PERTH AMBOY IS GREAT TO LIVE THERE bc I take my kids 2 school I go 2 work and I go home. I dont shop or hang in the city UNLESS they have some kind of FESTIVITIES which are always peaceful!!! The waterfront is nice & quiet and the cops are FRIENDLY for the most part. PERTH AMBOY IS AN UP AND COMING TOWN THEY HAVE NICE HOMES AWAY FROM DOWNTOWN NEAR RT35 & WOODBRIDGE(im buying one in 2yrs). THERE ARE OTHER RENTAL UNITS LIKE FEDERAL HILL & A PROPERTY ON THE WATERFRONT(not sure of the name) and KINGS PLAZA im sure one of these or HB Ports or Sail(buyers) will be to your liking THEY ARE ALL LIKE CITIES AWAY FROM THE CITY (thats mainly y i love mine). goodluck

Perth Amboy has better schools than Edison and Piscataway? You obviously were under the influence of a mind or mood altering substance when you typed that. So when you come back to reality you might want to amend that statement.
