Default Nutley Near Belleville

Hello...I am looking for opinions about the area of Nutley that is somewhat close to Belleville, a few blocks south of Centre. The area in Nutley looks and feels fine, but the Belleville area seems like it might not be as safe. What do you think?

There are some nice houses in that area, some new constructions, but I am wondering what people think about the area. I know Nutley itself is supposed to be really nice. Thanks.

Belleville has a larger minority population than Nutley. At one point, both were very strong Italian-American communities. nutley still is and so is Bellevile, but not as much. A little bit of Newark leaks into the southside of Bellevile, so there you may get some "rough" neighborhoods, but really it's nothing. most of Belleville is pretty decent and is more like Nutley. so you should be more than happy in the part of Nutley that you're in.

Nutley is a very nice town, with lots of nice people in it. if you go into Belleville, probably nothing bad will happen to you. no doubt, it's not as safe as Nutley, but it's fine. once you get to know that area, you'll be able to go down there without any problems.

Thanks. The reason I asked my question is because in reading through posts on this message board, the general consensus is that Belleville is continuing to head downhill. I was concerned about Belleville continuing to go downhill and that hurting property values in Nutley south/west of Centre street (for example, near Passaic Avenue). Do you think that even if Belleville continues to slide that it would eventually pull the bordering areas of Nutley down with it?

Considering that anything in Nutley still would be served by Nutley schools, etc. I am guessing that home values in that area there would still be strong, at least in the next 5-10 years. What do people think?

The US in general and NJ in particular experienced an enormous housing bubble, which is popping right now. So property values will decline across the board regardless of local trends.

Belleville is not a dangerous city, it is safer than some towns that are considered quite desirable. (Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed)

I recently went running in Nutley/Belleville/Bloomfield to get a sense of the places. While it's a fleeting snapshot, one gets both a close up picture from being on foot, and the big picture due to covering several miles (you cover enough ground to see transitions between neighborhoods, and you see them up close) Generally speaking, as you go south towards Newark, everything gets more sketchy, but Nutley seemed pretty safe (it's not terribly accesible from Newark). The part of Belleville that borders Nutley didn't look "upscale", but didn't look like a rough area either.

Hey I wouldn't be too concerned about safety. Sure, there are some ruffians and your neighborhood street toughs but if you stay out of their way, they'll stay out of yours. I currently live in the area, and am by no means an intimidating figure and I have nothing but good things to say. I also have a concealed weapons permit and have drawn my sidearm on two occasions and have used it once to maim a cat burglar.

That's a fine part of Nutley, not dangerous at all. Watch driving on Centre though. The cops patrol that street like you wouldn't believe. Belleville isn't that great, but I only go to Washington Ave. Stay on the main street and you'll be fine. The Pathmark there isn't bad, there is also a pizza hut, kfc, taco bell a little farther down and a mcdonalds, so you're close to a few things, plus you're close to the GSP, Rt. 3, Rt. 21, etc. It's also a short trip to the shopping center on Kingston. I'm not sure if it's technically in Nutley or Clifton, but there is a Target there, grocery store, Blockbuster, movie theater and some restaurants, etc. You're fairly close to a lot of things there so it's a nice location and totally safe...plus the schools are good too.
