Ooh good call on Harding! New Vernon also, but maybe too expensive for OPs budget. Green Village.
Summit has a few large lots. Madison has a few. Chatham Twp. has a few. Short Hills has a few. Summit and Short Hills will have the shortest commutes but ain't nothin' under an hour.
Why not Central NJ, if you can afford a house like that then you can afford to take the ferry. Just hop on the boat and your there in 30 min (and with a drink in your hand)
Thanks for all the input. To clarify, ideally we would like something around or below $1M, but might consider below $2M (especially if real estate continues to depreciate).
I guess there may be a lot of towns that might have a couple large properties, but we would be interested in a town that that is more the norm (for a less urban feel). The other problem with buying one of a few large properties in a town is that generally comes with an enormous house -- which we are not looking for. I'd rather have a smaller house to keep costs down in the long run.
Lots of great choices here. Few will get you Wall Street in an hour.
May I suggest Holmdel and commute by ferry, with your neighbors, to Wall Steet.
There are also some great places within Middletown.
Your commute is going to be more then an hour from Monmouth County, although if you would consider moving a little farther Monmouth County is one of the nicest counties in the state.

Change "few" to "none" and you'll be 100% accurate.
It's important to know ahead of time what the deal will be when it comes to commuting to Wall St. It's a bear.
