anyone live in Nutley? (I need friends :D)
Hi, my name's Pook. I'm from Thailand. I've lived here in Nutley (and also in US) for 6-7 months. I'm a graduate student at NJIT (Newark).
I love this town but I don't really have any friend here.
I thought that I would have a lot of american friends here but it didn't turn out that way - -'.
So I really want to have friends here.
I'm quite easy going. I cook Thai foods. I bake (just a beginner, you may take a look at my blog Adrift Life - A Whole New and Unseen World). I'm here as an international student. I can't work. So I have a lot of free time.
I use many IMs (MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Skype).
I hope that I will have more friends soon. I'm looking forword to hearing from you guys.

Hope you make some friends Pook. Americans can be very self-absorbed and cold. It's refreshing to hear someone just come right out and say they would like to make some more friends.
As I've gotten older I notice I have less friends and more acquaintances. It seems unavoidable due to the busy pace of life.
Anyone who does become your friend will probably be putting on some weight, judging by your good looking cakes!

Geez, are we as cold as your post just was? I think the problem is that Pook lives in Nutley, which isn't exactly a swingin' town for singles. Go to Hoboken Pook!

Hi Marc, that's true. I have to bake at least once a week so.. everyone around me has to eat my cake at least once a week too. Would you like to try some?
Hi Calico696, I live near St Paul's Congregational Church on Franklin Ave. I usually cook thai foods for my friends. I ever thought about bringing my foods to my neighbors to say 'Hi' but I'm afraid that they'll think 'what's wrong with this guy? is this edible? or is it poisoned?'
Hi Mattjd, Can you tell me more about finding friends in Hoboken? Normally I got friends from school but it doesn't happen here. Most of graduate students are working. So it's hard to find someone to hang out with. They just come to class after work and hurry back home after class finishes. So friends that I can hang out with are thai, chinese and taiwanese. There's nothing wrong to have asian friends but it's kinda a big surprise that I've lived here for almost a year and I cannot find any american friend.
I think I should try to say 'Hi' to someone I meet around my place

The reason why everyone goes to class, then heads home so quickly is because you go to NJIT and people don't want to be in Newark after dark lol. Hoboken is next to Jersey City, right on the river, across from Manhattan. A lot of young college students and recent graduates live there, so it is a good place to meet people your age. There are a lot of trendy bars and coffee shops there. I went to Seton Hall for grad school and didn't know anyone when I arrived. I lived in northern Bloomfield, right next to Nutley. There aren't many bars in South Orange...maybe one or two, but I always met friends there, during class, or at basketball games. It wasn't long before I met people from all over, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Parsippany, Paramus, etc. One of the best places to meet young chicks is at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus. It's a babe factory there. To meet guys, just find something in common with other Jersey guys, like football. There are always Devils tickets available, so you could go to a hockey game in Newark with a friend. Lie to the girls you meet. Tell them you're new in town and ask them to show you around. Tell them you heard of a good museum, restaurant, cafe in the city and ask if they want to go on a weekend. You can meet girls anywhere if you're confident enough and ok with accepting rejection. Hell, I've met girls at Bob's Discount Furniture store before.

Meeting people is not that easy under your circumstances. I also started out as an international graduate student and it took at while to settle in.
I did my graduate degree just next door, at Rutgers Newark. At the larger American Universities, there is a very lively student community, but at these schools, the campus is dead at 5pm. Because of this, you need to look elsewhere to find a social network. I can see you're already making a start, by posting here.
What I would recommend is trying to find clubs or groups of people with common interests. I found and joined a running club, and made a lot of good friends there. It's clear that you have hobbies too, so see if you can hook up with a some people who share your passion for cooking, baking etc. I don't know if there are baking/cooking clubs, but I don't see why there shouldn't be (if there isn't, you could always start one ... )

That's cool. I need more confidence to talk to people. I really have a trouble with my listening skill. I sometimes don't understand what people say especially teenagers. Both accent and slangs are difficult to me. Thanks for your good advices.
