The thing with Marlton is the Marlton circle (Route 70/Route 73). wikipedia has an article on it. I know, I take it, and it can be a pain. And the state pushes the plans to redevelop the circle.

I think towns along the PATCO line make most sense for the shortest commute for Camden. Burlington County to Camden isn't bad, but once you consider the possible change to Philly or in PA, it becomes noticeably longer. Depends on how long the OP wants to commute.

Both Mt.Laurel and Pemberton will require some Rt 38 or 73 usage. Mt.Laurel and Marlton are newer though. Newer homes, less blight.

fyi...Pemberton has the main Burlington County College campus.

Stick to Collingswood / Haddon Township area. That is clearly my preference.

Sorry this is a little old, but since we were discussing Camden in the other thread, I found this one on the Camden city-data page.

I hope you're not trying to compare these places to Camden. Camden is one of the most dangerous places in the country; there is nothing wrong with most of these places you mentioned. Yes, they are a little lower-income, and a couple of them such as Gloucester City and Bellmawr may be described by some as "white trash" but they should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Camden. The only one I would definitely not recommend would be Paulsboro, unless you want mutated children because of that stench of oil. But honestly, for people who are still young and may not have an unlimited budget, I would certainly recommend a place like Runnemede or Lindenwold as somewhere that is affordable but still within a pretty short distance to Camden/Philly.

Oh heavens no, Phils. I didn't want to leave that impression, and I am sorry if I did.

I didn't really think you were, but I did kind of get that impression, so I figured other people reading that that might not be as familiar with the area might've gotten the same impression as well.

I've never heard of Bellmawr being a bad town or a town filled with "white trash".. I have a friend that lives there and it seems like a regular middle-class/blue collar type of town with some crime here and there but nothing major. Is Gloucester City considered urban? That's one place you should hear something about, especially being right across the river from south Philly..

First, don't be concerned about Camden. As long as you don't move TO Camden, you should be fine. Camden is a horrible city, but it is a world within itself and once you get out of Camden, you are okay.

I also think Collingswood is a great choice. First of all, as others have mentioned, you are on the PATCO line, which is a high-speed train which runs from NJ, through Camden and into Philadelphia. It is very convenient to live near this train, especially if you work in Camden or Philadelphia.

Also, Collingswood is a really great town - it is an older town with a really great main street with all kinds of shops and restaurants. It's one of the nicest main streets in South Jersey. If you decide on Collinsgwood, stick to the area near the center of town as opposed to the west side near Camden.

Haddon Township is great too...it's right near Collingswood and also has great access to the PATCO line.

Others have suggested areas like Mt. Laurel and Voorhees. These are nice areas, but it really depends what you want. If you want big, spread out suburban - then you might prefer an area like Mt. Laurel or Voorhees. If you prefer an old-fashioned walkable town with a main street, you might prefer Collingswood or Haddon Township (Westmont area).

I would suggest Haddonfield too, but it's very expensive. Very walkable old-fashioned town with a lovely main street.

Another nice area...but it's spread out suburban (if you like that) is Cherry Hill. I'd say Cherry Hill would be preferable to areas like Mt. Laurel and Voorhees as it's closer to Philadephia and Camden. Cherry Hill has TONS of shopping and restaurants and the best library I have ever set foot into. Not sure how affordable it is for rents.
