Moving from Detroit to South Jersey area (near Camden)
Hello everyone,
My boyfriend and I are relocating to South Jersey from Detroit. He is 29 and originally from New Orleans, and I'm 27 from Detroit. We went this past weekend to visit one of his old college roommates, who hooked my boyfriend up with a job in Jersey. We both are looking for a change and want to move somewhere where we can start our own lives, minus the influence of our parents and families. His friend lives in Pemberton, and I am trying to figure out what is a good area for us to live in.
I know I do not want to live in Camden, but his job is in that area. I know that there is Mt. Laurel, Cherry Hill, Moorestown around that area, is that correct? We are going to rent an apartment first to feel out the area, but are there any suggestions on where we should look. His friend told us about the increase in gang activity in Camden. Is this the case all over the area? When he told me that, I got a little nervous, but I guess Detroit is no better lol!
Please help! and offer us any suggestions, assistance or guidance you can. We will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

The surrounding towns, are nothing like Camden with the exception of maybe, parts of Pennsauken.
Depending on where he works it may be advantageous to live along the River Line. (River towns like Palmyra Riverton, Cinnaminson, Delran, Riverside (not so much), Delanco, Edgewater Park

Well, Bill, you might want to include Magnolia, Gloucester City, Runnemede, Paulsboro, as well as parts of Westville, parts of Bellmawr and parts of Mount Ephraim as undesirable places to live IMO. Also, the last time I was in Pine Hill, I couldn't believe how much it declined, relative to the 80s.

Haddonfield is a nice town. A little further out is Medford that would have a more rural feel.

Thank you all so much!
How about Pemberton? That's where his friend lives. Is that a pretty decent neighborhood? And what about activities? Would any of you consider these good places to raise a family?

No, no, no to Pemberton boro. Some people don't like surrounding Pemberton Twp, (Browns Mills, Country Lakes, etc) but I don't mind these areas at all. Pemberton boro is a depressing place. Typical military town.

Being raised in Pemberton/ Burlington city I have no regrets. Pemberton has one of the most diverse schools in the country in terms of people from all over the country. There are plenty of rumors (from outsiders) about Pemberton/Mount holly/Willingboro having crime or gang issues but it's only based on a few isolated incidents throughout the year like gasstation robery, lil wanna-be gangsters and burglury but nothing to worry about. Lumberton, East Hampton are nice small towns near Pemberton. Generally anywhere in camden county is either 1.camden city 2.to expensive and non-diverse. Where exactly is the job located? That'll help because traffic/commute can be an issue.

No to Pemberton. Go rent in Mount Laurel, great area, lots of rentals, condos, townhomes and apartments, great shopping and location. Schools are very good. You are making a good decision coming here. It's a very nice and vibrant area with easy access to Philly, the NJ shoreline, NYC and other points of interest. Great place to relocate to.
This is a great apartment complex:

Pemberton borough* has a population of like 500? I think ur mistaken Wrightstown as the depressing military town. And btw CountryLakes,BrownsMills are neighborhoods within Pemberton Twp.
