NJ: $200K = middle class for a family of 2 with a couple of kids. $500K + = upper middle class. $750K + = wealthy.

Unless, you are truly a 1%-er. We are all the same people. Work, bills, mortage, etc. There is no "class" to me. You are either uber wealthy or work like everybody else.

According to the MsN article,I only match 1.
Somethings in Nj we have no control over, like car insurance, property taxes, and so on.
You are going to need a lot more than 85,000 yearly salary to buy a home in Nj.
Where is someone making that going to find decent housing in North Jersey?

for me, i dont think i will feel rich until at least i can retire and live off my savings and be able to afford everything i may want to spend money on. so i think as long as im working, i wont feel rich. even though i know thats not the real definition and shouldnt be. its more about "feeling" rich.

Hardly. I already posted the actual numbers for median income by county. If you live in the highest income county in the state, the median household income is $100k.

middle class is $200K? that's laughable. boy is our perception skewed (or our perception of needs -vs- wants). (sorry, is this not directed at you NJGOAT but who posted that).

Understood and I totally agree. Since the debate is still ongoing, let's put some more real numbers into it. This site breaks down the income levels of all people in NJ. They express by "all households", "family households" and "nonfamily households". Since most seem to be focused on families, here are the numbers for family households. I took the liberty to group them tighter on the bottom end for ease...

Department of Labor and Workforce Development | 2010 American Community Survey Income Page

Direct link to state numbers...

http://lwd.dol.state.nj.us/labor/lpa...010/njinc1.htm

$0-$25k = 12%
$25k - $50k = 16.6%
$50k - $75k = 16.5%
$75k - $100k = 14.3%
$100k - $125k = 12.0%
$125k - $150k = 8.2%
$150k - $200k = 10.0%
$200k+ = 10.6%

Expressed another way...

$0 - $50k = 28.6%
$50k - $100k = 30.8%
$100k-$150k = 20.2%
$150k+ = 20.6%

I would say that a "middle class family in NJ" ranges from $50k on the lower end to $150k on the higher end with 51% of NJ families falling into that range. Mean income is $106k.

The main link also allows you to view it by county. Here is the same as above for Hunterdon, the county with the highest income levels in the state:

Direct link to numbers for Hunterdon...

http://lwd.dol.state.nj.us/labor/lpa...10/huninc1.htm

$0-$25k = 5.7%
$25k - $50k = 11.2%
$50k - $75k = 11.8%
$75k - $100k = 11.5%
$100k - $125k = 15.0%
$125k - $150k = 9.5%
$150k - $200k = 15.0%
$200k+ = 20.3%

Trying to reach similar groupings as above in terms of percentage...

$0-$75k = 28.7%
$75k - $125k = 26.5%
$125k - $200k = 24.5%
$200k+ = 20.3%

Based on that I would say that a "middle class family in Hunterdon" ranges from $75k on the low end to $200k on the high end. With 51% of families in Hunterdon falling into that range. Mean income is $140k.

I know people don't like real numbers, instead prefering to debate their opinion, but there they are.
