Maplewood is very down to earth and the schools are good. South Mountain is widely thought to be the best elementary school. Milburn is very nice as well. The competition in the schools there is rough. My friend's daughter had a 3.6 GPA in highschool and was in the bottom half of her class when she graduated.

Look at Livingston too. It borders Short Hills, and the schools are just as good. The prices and property taxes are a little less (not much, but a little).
