Default Does The State Police Patrol Cities

I was just browsing the online Star Ledger and came upon a story about two off duty Irvington cops involved in a beating/cover up at a supermarket. In the comments section, one poster said he wished the "State boys" were on duty again.

Did the State Police augment certain city Police Departments or do they still do this? If so, why?

State Police patrol areas which do not have their own police force. This is very common out in Warren County where I live. Many of the smaller townships do not have a police department. I would think it is also common in some parts of South Jersey as well. As far as Irvington goes, no nothing about that.

I believe the State Police had a presence in Camden for awhile....but I'm not sure if they are still there.

Most sheriff's depts. in NJ only deal with county jails and other quasi-administrative, quasi-law enforcement jobs. They don't patrol cities or towns.
